Depends....

If you lack all semblance of common sense it's probably a good idea.

If on the otherhand you are smart enough to recognize a spoof, then it would be a stupid idea.

You have the PayPal account because it serves a purpose for you. Why would you close the account and inconvenience yourself and your bidders just because of what is basically spam?

By shutting down your account you are basically saying that you are afraid that you may be too dumb to handle internet commerce in which case you whould probably give up ebay and maybe your internet connection all together.

Of course the fact that you recognize the emails as phishers show that this is not true so why let some idiot in eastern europe dictate how you do business?

You only got 2 in 4 days! Boy you must be keeping a low profile on the net. I got 2 in the last 10 minutes. Must have gotten more than 20 in the last 4 days. Since they do not come from PayPal how is closing you account going to help? You can expect to get them without a PayPal account just the same. I can say that I have never gotten one on the email address I use for PayPal, only on my main email that is on all my web pages.

The phishers just send them broadcast to every email address they can find. I get dozens of phish emails that are supposed to be from Chase Bank. I don't have a Chase Bank account so I can't close it.

Thanks Guys for the input..
I know It sounded rather stupid to close the
account since I can recognize a spoof email.
The one I got the other day said I had payed for an ebay item through my BANK account..Not so....
My question is how do they get your info????
I know dumb question......
I do think that there shoud be a sound and restricted law that would stop the selling of your informatio.. Fat chance of that ever happening.

No one has to buy your info.... it's not all that difficult to get. With one bid that I have no intention of paying for I can have your ebay email address, your paypal emsail address address and your ebay registered mailing address. Since I can get that with a bidding account the only thing you get in return is a email address that may or may not still be active and a fake name and address. You think these guys actually pay for addresses?

I'm not saying that they are not, well, technically they are not.. they are "rented". Thru a number of different agencies you can rent addresses according to purchasing trends, sex, age demographics, children in household. etc. Email addresses are no different than telephone numbers (why do you think Toys R Us wants your phone number when you make an in store purchase even with cash) or mailing addresses in that respect.

What I am saying is that phishers have no need for the purchased lists. They can generate their own that are more targeted to their needs.

I came across a solution to spam and phishing by accident. When I went to DSL (from dial-up) I did not like the mail-filter service that came with the DSL-ISP, so went back to my dial-up ISP (with super-good filtering) and paid a few dollars extra to maintain my mail systems through them (About $6.00 a month for four email boxes). Then, I changed all of the email addresses by one digit and assigned those to eBay and PayPal only.

Now when I browse/buy off the 'Net (NOT eBay/PayPal) I use the DSL-ISP addy for return mail. The DSL-ISP is set to dump mail every 24 hours, but a daily check of that email service always shows well over 50 bits of junk mail.

So... For a few extra dollars a month (pennies a day) I do not have to deal with junk, spam and phishing probes very often. My last phish came in about a month ago. And once a sender is "dumped" through my preferred ISP that sender will never make it to my mailbox again. Works for me!

And, I might add, I also know the source of phishing/spam mail if it comes through my eBay/PayPal accounts, which seldom happens...

I found the write up about the security breach they recently discovered that allowed ANYONE to go to a website and get user names connected to email addies. Pretty sure that is why we have seen PayPal Phish emails addressed to our REAL names (and probably will for some time to come!):

You'll LOVE your DSL, phawthorne1! Can't believe how much time I wasted waiting for pages to turn.

And hope your old ISP is a good one and that you will be able to get new addresses with your DSL-ISP. Let us know if you have the same good fortune with spam/phish reduction that I got for those few extra dollars a month.

We are fairly new sellers on eBay and have been getting about half a dozen to a dozen a day supposedly from eBay and/or PayPal and/or customers. It's out there, they're just grabbing it and hoping we're so busy we won't notice they're phishing.

We forward every single one to the appropriate spoof department. I figure if everybody would forward them, eBay and PayPal'd get tired of dealing with them all and lean harder on the investigators and/or government or whoever they supposedly report them to.

Kinda pathetic, that so many people apparently have nothing better to do with their time than try to rip off, or even just annoy, people they don't even know... I wish there were a button to push that when you got the report back that yup, this was a real spoof, you could just blast the phisher's computer into permanent bluescreen...

Fear not! There is a learning curve with Windows XP v Windows 98, but you will get used to it pretty quickly.

Tess, my computer, gets an 'overhaul' once a year (thorough internal cleaning, fan replacement, junk removed, etc.) and with this last overhaul my tech suggested up-grading to XP as the 98 will soon be obsolete. (I'd tried XP before and hated it! I had XP removed and 98 re-installed the first time around.) He assured me he could remove a lot of the 'junk' that makes XP so cumbersome, and I OKed the change. He did what he said he'd do and my XP is leaner and faster than the previous XP version I'd had.

He also suggested Firefox as an alternative browser which I use regularly.

Bottom line, I like browsing with Firefox for some things, and XP for others. Each has their strong points (and weaknesses) so having both has improved my 'Net experience.

As any one can correctly assume, I'm no computer tech. Like driving a car, I know how to use it well, but haven't the foggiest understanding of what goes on 'under-the-hood'. Hence, the annual check-up/overhaul on both my vehicles AND my computer! Costs me a lot less than a new computer (or transportation) every few years, and everything runs smoothly between check-ups.

Good luck with your new computer and enjoy your XP. If you haven't used Firefox before, try it! You may well find it to be a very comfortable browser to work with and an advantage over XP for some chores.
