For the life of me, I have no idea if this necklace is new, old or in between. I can't even ascertain what it's made out of. The choker is 1/2 wide and made of a metal, but very flexible like a ribbon would be. Also, a magnet does not adhere. There are no markings anywhere. The medallion has open backed rhinestones. Does anyone have any ideas at all? I love it, but am stumped.

Gosh, that's very pretty! Stunning. Sorry I can't help you but jewelry people here will be able to, I'm sure.

It's a nice looking piece. If you have any inklings about it being gold, I suggest that you take it to a jeweler and have it tested.

French or Italian comes to mind because of the detail on the collar. As for age, I would suspect post 1960 because of the color and brilliance of the rhinestones and the design on the front piece. Medallion is reminiscent of a 1920's belt buckle.

I think we can safely say that this was not a cheap piece when new.

I would be interested to see a close-up of the back of the clasp and the back of the medallion. That might give a clue in regards to age as well.

A VERY pretty piece. Luck you!

There is slight wear on the back. Although, it could be just dirt. I have not tried to clean this. Is there a gold paint that can be brushed on? Even that is an iffy scenerio to me. Wouldn't gold paint after manufacture make the chain less flexible? Or, is it somehow done during manufacture. I've no doubt that this was expensive. I don't think it's gold though because why put rhinestones in a gold necklace. Could be plated. Would have been nice to see marks somewhere.

Wow, I'm still stumped. This just screams quality. Makes you wonder why there is not a manufacter's ID.

I've seen this kind of work before. Manufactures set up stamping machines that can handle a range of metals so the item can be made in gold, silver or plate. Usually someone who goes to that expense will mark their items, but I have several Fench pieces of that quality that are not marked.

It's a beautiful piece. When you list it, just be sure to put the exact dimensions in the description. After all, you wouldn't want a Rottweiler owner to buy it and find out later it will only fit a Pomeranian.

Thanks everyone! I get the feeling it may be French. That also makes a bit of sense since a Lea Stein Rolls Royce brooch was in the lot. I just have no idea how I'm going to title this one or how I'm going to write it up!!

I'm sure Ralphie would look just peachy in this fine gold choker. I may have a tutu around here somewhere in just the right size and color. Add some ballet slippers and he'll be set to go. LOL!!

Hi ya, Ralphie! Just kidding, old boy. Oops, I mean "young man".

Cheryl you've done a great job with your photos (as usual) - I would date this to the 1920's or so. Maybe even Art Nouveau. Of course, much of this period was copied but your's doesn't look as if it was to me.
As for the metal try Rub & Buff - it's a wonderful thing to have for jewelry touch up as well as many other metal items.

Here ya go Classic, she probably has just the collar you've been wanting

Classy Gold Collar (girls, don't go there)

Cheryl, I stand by my age estimate. Details are not correct for a 1920's piece.

While looking for your collar, look at all the yummy stuff I found here:

Don't you love what she has at Morning Glory? Have you looked over the entire site? Some of the things are to die for.

YES! I would rather window shop there than at Tiffanys. Give me vintage over new any day.

I'm still drooling over the Hobe purse. So tacky yet tasteful.
