I am slightly confused. I sold both of the "new in package" Disston saws that I have. You can tell I don't know what I'm doing. The first sold for $19.00. The next I raised the price to $29.95 with a buy it now of $49.95 on Sunday. I'll be darned if I didn't wake up this morning and find it sold! The rest of the hammers, srewdrivers and saws are not in new condition. Without good identifyer, I don't think I will be able to sell these tools online for much. I was thinking of selling them at my garage sale. Everytime I hold a garage sale, the three men always come at the beginning of theday. Each one asks for something different. One asks for tools, anther gold and watches and the other toys. Each summer for atleast the last 5 years, I have garage sales and this always happens. The same guys.

Does anyone have any experience selling tools on or off ebay? Thanks

My husband has lots of experience buying tools at garage sales, estate sales & thrift stores - but I can't get him to let go of any of them to sell on ebay!!!
There are some good books of old tools - maybe someone can suggest a good website as well.
I think it you can name it, date it and do good photos you have a good chance of getting some good prices for them.
As for the prices on the sold saws - that's the way it goes on ebay - it could have been the dates that you listed them or any combination of factors.

Can you ask your hubby if $5.00 for a hammer is too much to start at when selling at a g sale?

Here's a good starting point for figuring out prices of tools of all types and what's really nice about this site is that you can use their decriptions too.

I've seen him pay that for a good old hammer. He hates the new stuff - cheap made in china stuff.

paloma - I sell alot of tools on ebay and it's a gamble starting your bid out low if it's not a very high dollar item or modern "tool truck" tools. I alway's start tools out at the lowest price I can let it go for. I have been bitten many times by starting out a nice old tool with a low price only to have it end with one bid. The only hand tools I have found I can start at 99 cents are tool truck tools like Snap On, Mac Tools and Matco. They alway's bring good money.

lady - Sounds like hubby needs to buy some Snap On tools. The best money can buy hands down.

Mike, these were purchased at the minimum 50 years ago. Some go back 75 - 100 years. The father of my 85 year old friend's husband was a carpenter by trade in the midwest who moved to california at the turn of the century. I have atleast 4 boxes of tools. I thought I'd sort through the stuff I knew about: hammers, screw drivers etc and hold off on the others until I knew what they were. There is even an anvil in the lot! Oh, my friend and her husband were amatuer gemologist/rock hounds. They had huge rocks with garnets, opals, raw diamonds and the like. Their rock hounding tools are also in these boxes. I recognize some of the picks and tiny hammers. (You should see how tiny they are. Really cute)

piinthesky, thanks for the link. I'll start my reearch there.

Paloma, you do have some good provenance on the tools--their age etc. If they're at all decorative, would look good on a wall over a workbench, there's a market for those--but not much money.

If you have some marks on some of the more interesting pieces post some picks. I do have a book and I'll show Mark the pics when he gets home.

If we don't know, surely somone else here will.

Mike - I'm sure he has some Snap On. His tool collection is second only to his album and stereo equipment collection.

Paloma - Take photos of the "good" stuff and we'll all help if we can.
