I am still going through these records. Please forgive this stupid question. If the records are not marked either 33 1/3 or 78, How do you tell the difference? I have a bunch of LPs up and I thought they were 33's! (Tells when I grew up, doesn't it!) These records were used in a radio station during the 50s - 70's HELP! I have a really cool comedy album of Stanley Holloway. when I looked it up on Music stack and ebay, the closest ones are 78s. I did find some 33s.
One more thing: Some of these records are REALLY RARE. If They don't sell on ebay, should I list them somewhere else or garage sale them?

I used to own a slew of 78s when I was in college -- every single one was SMALLER IN DIAMETER than any 33.3LP I ever came across...
From my blighted memory, the 78s were around 11" in diameter?
Hope this helps...

I think they are 10" - ebay has records broken down by size and there is no 11" (Close Tom)
They are thicker as well - it's more of a Bakelite material than 33 1/3.
If they are really rare you need to find out the value and list around that price.
Recently I sold a rare album - the first time I listed it for $19.99 and wasn't even getting much attention so I pulled it and on 20 cents listing I started it at $99.99 - what did I have to lose. It sold!!!! It's another example of the flooded mark and one little item not getting noticed.
What kind of records are they - Jazz - Big Band ???

LadyJ:
Early 78s were very thick -- I had one from 1911 that had a ceramic (?clay) center, surrounded by bakelite. Twas the most fowl racist disgusting thing I'd ever heard in my life -- a minstral show called: "Two Black Crows" Probably be worth a fortune today
HOWEVER, 78s were produced well into the late 50s, & the ones I had from the 40s & 50s seemed normal thickness to me at the time -- "Praise the Lord & Pass the Ammunition" by Kay Keyser & his Kollege Kadets...NMT: "Teddybears Picnic"
I had a 200W POWER AMP and a gigantic SPEAKER I used to hang out my window at Marshall Apts on Marshall St, what used to be the social center of Syracuse U in the 60's -- used to BLAST "teddybears" at FULL VOLUMN just to watch all the stoners..."groove"

I guess I've never seen any from the 50's - so I stand corrected - maybe they weren't 10 inches either but ebay doesn't list 11 inch.
How little Ralphie doing now? Still improving I hope?

78s are thick. And, they are easily broken.
If you could post a pix I could probably tell which you have.
The 78s also only have one song on each side (like 45's, but are much larger).
The grooves are also more pronounced. You can see them much clearer than you can on the lps.
I'm on and off the computer today trying to get some housework done (Yuch) but will check back later.

Great! thanks. The REALLY old ones are waaaay on the other side of the livingroom. I'm making my way over to that pile (Of course, you know that they really aren't in a pile, they are all standing up) I'll get over to them soon. The rest are all mixed up. in piles near the sofa, the table, the fireplace, tv stand etc

yea it sucks getting old lol
speaking of Dick Clark-he told a story, that one time he was walking down the street in the
early 80's and heard two teenage kids talking.
One of them said to the other-"would you believe Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?...ya gotta love it
