Thanks for the post... couple things I noticed that are interesting.
1) Canadian Tire Money?!?! I'm kind of surprised at this one being acceptable!!
2) Payko.com... so are they up and running again?!? If so, this seems like a great alternative to those of us that don't take Paypal. It looks like it would work like the old Bidpay. Anyone try it yet?
3) Sad to see that Auctionchex is not permited... I've had good results with them since Bidpay stopped sending Money orders...

Payko, hmmm, got me. I don't see how they qualify either. Looks clear to me that they are as they say only a third party payment service that has nothing to do with disputes. Makes you wonder, did ebay have their head screwed on correctly when they approved them. I get the feeling that if I were to place the Payko logo in my listing's it would be my luck (of course) that ebay would then ban them and make me remove all their logo's like they did with BidPay.
parklane64 - "Why is a venue getting involved in transaction specifics?"
Because it's their venue and they can do with it what they like, don't like it, don't sell there. When you start your own online auction service feel free to make whatever payment methods accepted that you like. If you want to sell on "ebay's" site and not your own you have to play by "their" rules.

In completely unrelated news Jeff Jordan, who most recently was president of eBay's fraud-tainted PayPal payment business, announced his departure claiming "family problems". Jordan was expected to succeed outgoing Chief Executive Meg Whitman, and had headed eBay's North America division 2000-04. eBay shares fell 5.3%, marking a three-year low.
Disclosure of Jordan's exit came after Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney cut his earnings growth estimates for eBay, based on the threat posed by Google Checkout. Mahaney said, "This speaks volumes about Google product development skills and PayPal's lack of innovation," citing Checkout was faster, easier and less expensive than PayPal.

Jeff doesn't want to be involved when the Federal anti-trust investigators show up with warrants. The sudden updating of acceptable 3rd party payment services by Ebay is an attempt to halt that visit.

And, this throw-away garbage phrase is supported by what facts or reports?
Ignoring the 3rd and 4th tier payment processors such as MoneyBoogers and StormyWeatherPay, name ONE major financial company that SUCCEEDED in head-to-head competition?
Let's review the CORPSES:
c2it - from the world's largest financial institution went ARBUSTO within a year = DEAD MEAT!
MoneyZap - from (?) Western Union went POOF! = DEAD MEAT!
USPS MONEY SUMPTIN - can't remember da name of their short-lived loser, but it too is DEAD MEAT!
X-COM - remember when AW jumped on MUSK'S bandwagon with this hoser? Confusing as to whether da MUSKIE bought out PayPal, or vice versa...regardless -- DEAD MEAT!
ExchangePath - Oi! What a REAL TOTAL JOKE! Another sack of kaka-poopoo that AW embraced with catered lunches -- DEAD MEAT!
...and LAST and very much LEAST:
ShrillPoint -- feeBay's OWN joke of a system that SUCKED beyond all belief -- DEAD MEAT!
I have a sneaky suspicion that PayPal's success was (and continues to be) due to the fact that PP makes it QUICK & EASY for financial losers like me-&-Ralphie to offer CREDIT CARD services to anybody without the HASSLE + EXPENSE + CREDIT CHECK required with a "real" merchant account...
Considering that GOOGLE CHECKOUT offers NUTTIN for ME & the thousands like me who have been DELIGHTED with our experiences with PayPal since 1999(!) makes me wonder if they going to be just another in a long line of...DEAD MEATS?

Not having fully checked it out, Payko looks to be very close to the old Bidpay. That's the first I'm going to check out.

**PROCESSING ISSUES WITH PAYPAL**
Due to issues with Paypal, transactions funded via Paypal are not being accepted at this time. We are in the process of returning credit card funding and will be processing these transactions shortly. Please email Paypal and express your desire for our services and frustration for thier handling of this issue - With customer support we may be able to see Paypal offered again. If you have any questions please email [email protected]
I had some of my customers use them WAY back... must have been around 2003 or so... and didn't have any problems. Then, they just disappeared from the face of the earth. I'm betting that they're trying to get back in the game now that Bidpay has re-released their site... and is not offering the same service they used to. It really is a good market to get into, since there's practically no competition now.
I find it pretty interesting that eBay has them on their accepted payment list.. but that they state that they've been having problems getting Paypal back on board. Doesn't make much sense... but that's typical for Paypal...

Payko.com was deleted from the approved list on 7/6. Apparently the list was revised, as this is the only change. Mike was right -
Rob Chesnut
Hi, I'm Rob Chesnut, head of eBay's global Trust & Safety organization. Completing a transaction with an appropriate, safe and convenient payment method is an important part of trading on eBay. While many of the payment methods offered by eBay sellers offer a high degree of safety and convenience, a few simply are not appropriate for the eBay marketplace. So last October, we introduced a global payments policy and -- in response to requests from the Community -- began a comprehensive evaluation of dozens of payment methods to determine which made sense for use on eBay.
Following this review, we've updated the policy to identify those payment methods that we've determined are not appropriate for the eBay marketplace. Please note that eBay's evaluation relates only to whether a particular service is appropriate for the eBay marketplace. These payment methods may, in fact, be useful services for consumers in other contexts.
The policy clarification also specifies the payment methods that are permitted on eBay.
If you would like to read more about the Accepted Payments Policy, please click here.
Sincerely,
Rob Chesnut
Senior Vice President, Trust & Safety
The revised list as of 7/6/2006 ....
"Payment Services permitted on eBay: Allpay.net, Bidpay, Canadian Tire Money, cash2india, CertaPay, Checkfree.com, hyperwallet,com, Moneybookers.com, Ozpay.biz, Paymate.com.au, Propay.com, XOOM
Thanks for the update. This is RIDICULOUS!!! How on earth are we the sellers supposed to abide by eBay's own policies if they change them within a 24-hour perod!!! I strongly do not believe that they have any legal right to tell us what payments we can/can not accept from OUR customers. I have already begun the process of looking for alternatives to eBay, and this just gives me more reasons to speed things up.
p.s. I honestly don't see how buying a money order to pay for an auction through Payko is any different from buying a money order to pay for an auction from a 7-11, the USPS or other money order suppliers.... How can they justify it?

I hope the media jumps on this. EBay started controlling payment types sellers could accept to maintain a safe venue for the buyers. I guess I can swallow that. Now eBay has slyly changed the wording from 'safe' payments to 'acceptable' payments (whatever is good for their bottom line - scr@w the sellers and the buyers).. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop - Paypal only?
You bring up some good points... How much do you all want to bet that the change from "safe payments" to "accepted payments" was brought about from the threat of lawsuits from those that were deemed unsafe. One would think that they could have been sued for libel. I think that the only reason they don't limit it to just Paypal is to give the illusion that they aren't restricting trade (not that I buy it...). Notice that on the list of just one dozen "accepted payments" two are Australian only, one is Canadian, and one is Indian. It doesn't leave many options for the rest of us... does it??? Fortunately, the media is giving some coverage to this... but I'd like to see more...
