One of the members on the discussion boards over at FeeBay mentioned the fact that UBid has bought Bidville.

Is there anyone here that has any experience with selling on either site?

I can't really say I have had experience SELLING on Bidville. I have had a lot of items listed there, let them run out a while ago. I sold a few things, but not really worth the trouble of listing.

I just recieved this email(NOTE: I canceled my account with them years ago and still get emails.):

Dear paloma,

As you may already know, the Bidville.com website was purchased by uBid.com Holdings, Inc. on July 27th. We are thrilled that Bidville has the opportunity to benefit from the experience and resources that uBid has to offer.

It is our collective goal to expand and improve Bidville as quickly as possible. Our plan is to maintain Bidville as a separate entity from the uBid.com website. We will systematically improve Bidville's technology, website, marketing efforts and Customer Service. Bidville will remain a
place for consumer to consumer and small business auctions and storefronts.

It is important to us that the transition of ownership and management occurs as smoothly as possible without interrupting the daily operations of the website. We
will do our best to communicate with the membership as much as possible. Your continued (and improved) success is vital to our success.

We welcome Bidville to the uBid family. Thanks for continuing to grow with us.

I've had a Bidville account for about 5 years and still haven't bought (or sold) anything from the site.

I'm afraid I don't quite get it.

Why would one auction company want to run an unrelated auction site? Wouldn't consolidation be more profitable?

Example: if eBay bought Yahoo, how long would they try to run them both? WHY would they want to run them both?

Two websites in the same industry seems to me to be either a conflict of interest or a division of resources. Either way, this sounds like a mistake.

UBid deals in new merchandise only from certified merchants who must fill out information and go through a process to be "certified" to sell on UBid.

Bidville is more of Mom & Pop auction and store site similar to what Ebay was when it first started.

I think UBid sees a market here to grown and may be compete on some level with Ebay. Some think that this will position them to expand should Ebay start to falter.

When Yahoo did their first snafu and made listing fees as high as eBay's, bidville was one of the sites I went to. Turns out, it was a big mistake. The site was over run with worthless sports cards. 1000's of the same 2 cents card with keyword spamming at a rampage. Looking for the 4 slice toaster. Get thousands of 2 cent worthless sports cards.

Plus, the worthless sports cards crowd is ruthlessly disruptive to the whole site and boards. Any potential bidder of items of value, were quickly turned away by the worthless sports cards crowd. Ubid buying bidville could be a good thing as long as they first dump the sports cards. If they do not, then they have purchased a worthless entity.
