Are the heart shaped stones in these screw-back earrings Lapis ? They are really really dark is why I'm asking. Almost navy blue in color . They setting is 14K .

I can't tell from your picture.

Lapis lazuli (lazurite) is a relatively soft material: 5-6 on the hardness scale, where diamond is a 10. It should have brassy yellow flecks in it, which are pyrite. Lapis is typically deep blue, azure blue, violet-blue or greenish-blue.

The best lapis in the world comes from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Hey Stop,Is there a way to tell the difference ? They tap against the teeth like stone and are cold against my skin. Also the setting is 14K gold (I stone acid tested to make sure)

Synthetic Lapis Lazuli

Lower S.G of 2.38.

Softer than naturals.

Decidedly porous. Immersion in water will cause the synthetic to weigh far more than when it was dry.

Synthetics react strongly to Hydrochloric acid producing a rotten eggs smell.

More opaque than naturals.

Iron pyrites added to synthetics will crumble when a needle is applied.

Under Chelsea filter the natural will appear a dull red while the synthetic will not.

Thanks for your reply Stop. I immersed them in water for about a minute, gave them a shake to get the water off .They weighed 6 grams dry and 6.1 grams wet. So they must be real Lapis .
