My SIL has a painting by RC Gorman titled "Woman with Orange Shawl", signed and dated 1977. I checked eBay and while some lithographs are priced well over $1,000, there are no paintings.
She wants me to sell this on eBay, I don't want to handle it~ (she's desperate for money, NOW). I think she would get more if she took it to a gallery.
Anyhoo......what is the proper way to package a painting for shipment and how would you ship? This is not one of the larger ones and falls within the measurements that would not make it "oversized", but it's on the edge.

This is the reason I haven't tried to sell a painting on ebay. I have no idea how to package it safely and cheaply. You would need special packaging for a painting. The ones I have seen are made of woood. I am sure someone here knows more about this.

If lithographs are priced well over $1,000 by this artist then an original painting should be very valuable. I'm with you, she should take it to gallery or good auction house.
If she insists on selling it on ebay, she should have it professionally packed and shipped or at very least professionally packed. The buyer will pay this cost and probably appreciate professional service.
There are company that specialize in art and fine antique. TRC 918-660-4900 or Acantiques 1-866-506-5477 are some names I have seen but never used.
She can also contact a local gallery to see who they use for shipping.

You should nail down the provenance of the painting. A receipt would be a really good idea. The problem is that most Gorman works are simple in concept and easy to fake. Since the artist has merged with the Infinite (thank you Coen Brothers) there is a lot of incentive to produce fakes.
I would not attempt to sell it on eBay.
Once you have the provenance and are certain of its authenticity, take it to a reputable auction house. Most higher-end auction houses like to group objects for a particular sale, so you need one that is planning a Southwestern Art sale.

What difference does it make if it's oversize? The cost of shipping will not be a factor to someone buying a Gorman. Safety is the important thing. This painting will need to be properly wrapped and placed inside a well cushioned expandable mirror/picture carton. That package will then need to be placed inside a styrofoam cushion lined wooden crate custom built to accomodate it. Whatever carrier you use, (FedEx, UPS, DHL) be absolutely sure you understand the extent of their liability and make sure it is fully covered. If you encounter a receiving clerk that insists the carrier will not accept wooden crates for shipment, you'll have to staple cardboard to the sides and around the edges of the crate to obscure the wood and make it look like a corrugated carton. Or, you can cut a twin size mattress carton in two, and set the crate inside one end and cushion well with newspaper. Slip the other piece of the matt carton down over the first piece and tape securely. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it's not as bad as it looks except for the crate. Any cabinet shop or cultured marble shop can whip one out for you in a few minutes.

If it's truly a genuine RC Gorman, she would be nuts to sell it on eBay. (No offense intended towards your skills as a seller. It's just not a good idea.)
I understand that she needs money asap but I believe she would still be much better off taking out a personal loan now and then consigning the painting to either an auction house or a reputable dealer.
If you are not sure where to turn for help, try and get your hands on a copy of Southwest Art magazine and look at the advertisements for galleries and upcoming auctions.

If you're googling - R.C. Gorman brings up many more results than plain RC Gorman.
these people say they carry paintings also, so they might give you an idea of $$?

good advice fluffy.
Tell her I'll give her 500 for it tomorrow if she can prove it's real. There are lots of fakes.

Let me add in my 2 cents. I would (and have) sold Gorman lithos on eBay, but I don't think that I would sell a painting. I might, but probably wouldn't.
How did this person who is "desperate for money" come by this painting? I don't have any basis for questioning other than, usually, people with original Gormans are relatively well-to-do.

I'm pretty sure both Sotheby's and Christie's have online forms for review for submission to auction.
But it can take up to six weeks for an answer.
I had some vintage print plates that they were interested in but then decided not to include in an auction. They were very helpful in giving advice on alternative places to sell.

It's my sister-in-law and she's had it for well over 20 years. She's gotten herself in a huge mess...too long and drawn out.....
I think she's an idiot for wanting me to list this, I don't doubt it's original, she has several wonderful and offbeat pieces and she thinks she'll get top dollar on eBay...if I do it the work. (Heck, up to this point, I haven't been good enough to be Mark's wife. Can you feel the love?)

There is this oil painting:

and a pastel:

There were quite a few other oil pastels. They don't seem to command a high multiple of prices of lithographs.

Nope, sorry; about 854,000 either way.
Google pays no attention to punctuation. That can be annoying sometimes when you want it to.

If you think it's a bad choice to list it on eBay, I would trust your instincts and JUST SAY NO! It is hard to imagine how you can be a hero in this case. She is in a bad spot and may be looking for someone to blame it on.

Maybe you could help her out of her jam and take the painting as collateral, then you wouldn't necessarily have to sell it.
