Went with my son on impulse to a Borders bookstore - found 3 had-to-have books totalling nearly $50. Came home, searched on eBay, found I could have purchased the 3 with buy-it-now for $25, including shipping. When will I learn?

Well, we all have our moments! I bought a $40 book for our grandson the other day at Borders and am afraid to see what it would have been on eBay. But how could I have known I wanted that book--until I saw it?!

Those are good insights. Amazon knew from the beginning that it was important to showcase new books to you, thus their emotionally intelligent interface (presenting you with choices based on your previous buying and browsing activity). They now try to emulate the bookstore experience by showing you various pages on demand: title page, copyright notice, first page, excerpt, etc.

Trouble is, it doesn't really work. People who love books love to be around books, lots of books, not tiny flat 2-dimensional depictions of them.

And until Amazon figures out how to deliver a steaming hot caffeinated beverage with every page view, Borders still seems to have a very viable business model.

I like to watch the weird science auctions. You would not believe some of the stuff people will buy. Most of it nauseating!

I understand the need for science to have strange body tissues, but is it really worth $1000 to get psoriasis samples. Sounds like a flakey business to me

Edited to add- OOPS, looks like I posted this to the wrong thread. I could have sworn Ralphie posted about some crazy impulse buy auction but I can not see the thread now. Strange!
