Hi all,

Here's the deal. I sold an HP camera that needs repair. Auction number 170052061757.

One bidder, which is fine. The guy is a newbie, registered in May of 06.

So what's the problem, you say? Well, he didn't send payment and I started an UID. Okay, so???

Anyhow, the other day I get an IM from him. I replied because I recognized his user name.

Here's the complete conversation, with ID's edited out:

Him: HELLO
Me: Hello
Him: how are you doing
Him: is it hot overthere
Him: it is me celestino
Me: I'm wondering why you are typing to me. Is it because you have received notice from eBay that your payment has not been received?
Him: what
Me: Correct. I filed with eBay yesterday.
Him: how is this
Me: The auction closed on 11/26. Payment is due within ten days. That would be by 12/6. You said you were going to send a money order on 11/30. Payment has not been received.
Him: i did seand the payment you did you get it
Me: No, I haven't gotten the payment.
Him: tion the way
Him: sorry ti is on the way
Me: I'll let you know when it arrives.
Him: 0k think you

My problem is, seeing how he communicated in the IM, I don't know if he's aware the camera is non-functional. I don't want to burst his balloon. Could be he just looked at the pictures and didn't read the text. If that's true, it might be kinder to just let the UID run out. Then he wouldn't get a strike. I don't care about the fees, pennies...

So my options are, assuming his payment DOES arrive:

1. Send him the camera and hope for the best.
2. Let the UID ride and return his payment.

Anyone care to contribute? I'm really, really on the fence about this. I don't want a disappointed buyer. On the other hand, one COULD say it's his problem. But that's not the way I work.

Lucy

I'd send the camera, include the auction description, and . . . refund if he's disappointed.

Yeah, sounds good.

If it worked out that he's disappointed I'd likely just refund him without asking him to return it.

The shipping is more than what he bid for the dang camera!

Lucy, don't worry. In your auction title it is obvious that there is a problem with the camera and that it is good for parts only. Your description confirms it. It is obvious that this is an "As Is" item. You should have no problems.

Thanks, Paloma. I guess the next step is does his payment get here?

Ugh.

Why not just contact him again and ask if he is aware that the camera was for parts only?
If he says no - then you can decide to return or not return the money order (if you get it).
So why did he IM you??

Writing him before I ship sounds good. If it turns out he didn't realize the camera is broken, he won't be out the shipping.

Edited to add: Why did he IM me? I haven't the faintest idea! Seemed like he just wanted to chat...
