Photoshop is your friend. You use the text tool to create or edit the copy and then render it, and stretch it via the Distort or Perspective tool under the Edit menu. Any 10 year old can probably show you how.
Repeat this mantra and the secrets of the universe can be yours - "Google makes me smart, Photoshop makes me beautiful, eBay makes me poor"

agitprop is correct. Photoshop would be the best way. Plus you would have much more control over the text (colors, fonts, etc)

There is also a free photoshop plugin out there somewhere that does a really nice job with that. I have it but it's on another machine at home. I'll look for it later.

Thanks guys, I don't use Photoshop. I don't generally do enough image editing to justify that kind of price, and I won't do the alternatives to buying it.
The software I remembered using was Canoma, originally published Metacreations and then bought out by Adobe, which prompty discontinued the product; it's no longer supported.
The programs Neglus suggested looks like my best alternative.
