I've come to the breaking point trying to deal with AOL and AOL users. I would estimate that a third of those buyers using AOL force me to resend
the invoice because they don't get them (they say).

I tried to get around this by opening Yahoo and Gmail email accounts from which I send the invoice instead of from my main isp...(extra time used). Still I get irritable emails of the type "why don't you respond"....sometimes as many as 4 repeats. For a measly $5 or $10 dollar book I'm wasting more time dealing with them than the time I spent listing. Plus, it's their crappy isp or personal spam filter that's the problem, not me or my isp....I've been doing books on ebay for 8 years. There are no such difficulties with other isp's that I mail to.

So, I'm strongly considering adding a $1 surcharge onto AOL users(and Earthlink) to let them know that their isp is defective...and, especially, to get paid a little for my time that their isp flagrantly wastes.

I don't think that going through the Ebay checkout form helps...my experience with it is that it has exactly the same failure rate, and wastes appreciably more time filling out ebay's form than does my personal invoice template.

Comments please....

Paul

P.S. newbies with 0 feedback are a similar problem, but They don't fully understand the ebay's inscrutable complexities yet...so I am willing to spend a little time shepharding them to the payoff.

One good thing about ebay checkout is that the information is not reliant on any email system, The user can click on the item and pay directly with all necessary information (shipping) completed. I never even open my WBN or invoices from sellers (I use AOL and it seems to me that they get through ok)but pay directly through ebay or their 3rd party checkouts. I think that buyers should get a $1 rebate from sellers who do not make checkout easy

I am on AOL,and I set my spam filter to 'medium' and I have no problem getting Ebay related emails.
I also check my spam folder daily,no Ebay email ever end up there.
What ISP do you use?
If AOL finds too many spam emails coming from certain servers,it will block them and so far AOL seems to be doing a good job.
You may want to ask your bidder to look into it.

I just checked my spam folder, there are 79 emails and all are spams,so AOL is doing its job.
AOL members can report email as spam and if enough complaints, then AOL will block either that email addr or the website where it comes from. But I cant see how anyone would complain about Ebay related emails as spams.

I also pay directly through eBay, not through email. Sellers who have items not available for multiple eBay checkout get paid way last.

A SURCHARGE for AOL USERS?

Now that's a great idea. 90% of my communication problems are because of AOhell. The other 10% is Earthlink. One dollar isn't enough for AOL users. It should be $9.00. AOL sucks, always will and anyone still using them holds 0% credibility.

An important follow up for all you happy AOL users. The implication of this problem is that you're not seeing all your email THAT YOU WANT! You're not even aware that some emails came in and disappeared.

Sure your spam box has captured spam, but some non-spam emails never make to the spam box...they are deep sixed and you're not notified (nor am I). Many of my AOLer's have written me that they've checked the spambox and inbox and there's no email from me...after I've suggested that they look.

Think hard about this...AOL (or your personal filter) is flawed in it's execution and you are coasting along in pleasant unawareness that important emails have vanished without letting you know.

stonecold...you know what I'm talking about. By the way, the ratio of AOL problems I get to other isp problems is about 50 to 1.

Merry Christmas! from a Happy AOL user for 10yrs.
I have to say I have never missed any emails in all the years I'm selling on ebay and if some people are having problems you might check your settings. I have checked my spam filter often and never found any mail I needed to receive.

I am just a happy camper!!!......lol

I know AOL users are not getting Vendio WBN's because they are kicked back to me. I also get my emails kicked backed to me that are sent to AOL users.

My sister uses AOL and if I send her an email using my company gmail account, she does not always get it. However, using my personal gmail account she usually does.

The other is Earthlink who's response to me is fill out this form and I will send your email to your buyer. I just delete.

I rely almost entirely on the eBay message system now. At least I have "proof" that I have communicated with the buyer.

I don't understand why people use AOL. It's like having a parent filter everything you see and do.

You are right, there are some emails we never get and never know they exist, because big brother AOL decides they are spams.
We will never find them in our spam filter.
But why do we stay with AOL?
We are too lazy, complacent to switch, plus the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence.

You go ahead and keep believing that. When you pull your head out of the sand, let us know.

plus the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence.

Considering the source from a poster who is wrong 75% of the time, this posting is clearly from that 75%.

They won't believe you. They never believe me. It seems to trigger some sort of uber-defensiveness. People get angry that you expect them to think and act like an adult.

AOL is reason #93 why you should never take your feedback seriously.

So if some emails are missing and we never know?
We are still here, does it really matter that much?
What is it to you that we are missing emails? If it does not bother us,why should it bother you??
So we miss enlarging our organ by x number of inches,we miss an inquiry of bidding on one of Ebay items,we miss a friendly hello from a prospective suitor?
Once I resurrected an inquiry from my spam filter-a gentleman from 'Malta' claimed to be interested in buying 700 dollars worth of goods from my shop,he sent me 2 US postal orders (each 975 dollars) from UK,scribbled on the postal order is the name of a buyer in Georgia, our GA,not ex Soviet Georgia.
The 2 postal orders have no watermarks and I turned them over to USPS fraud investigation dept and they yawned.
Email is not the only way we communicate with the outside world?
For those of you who are into occult, astral projection is a better way to visit your loved ones and your enemy ,forming a watcher with some of your astral substance is a damn good way of spying on someone, also evoking a spirit to do some dirty work for you is not a shabby idea.
Now these are the deeds I would miss ,not whether AOL is trashing my emails!

(yawn)

I was recently at my daughter in laws house and she asked me to look at her computer which was running exceedingly s-l-o-w.

I spent a whole day on her computer fixing this and that (she only had a few adware items that needed to be taken care of) and tweaking her startup items.

I finally narrowed it down to the AOL her teenage daughter had installed on her computer. I left the AOL IM capabilities and uninstalled all the other AOL crap. Once I did that her computer instantly started performing as it should!

AOL sucks for the most part!

What is it to you that we are missing emails?

Have you even read or understood any of the posts here? I guess this belongs in that 75% area I spoke of earlier.

Let me tell one more time.

If we have an AOL winner of an auction, you can bet that our e-mail to them will get rejected. It happens way too often. And in almost every case, the person who has the AOL account will state that they were never notified, when in fact they were, but the AOL system simple don't allow the e-mails to go through. Whether it be in the inbox or the spam file. They just don't go through.

So do I care that you are missing e-mails. YES. My reputation is a stake with your crappy AOL service. 100 % fault of the AOL user and we get the short end of the stick.

Yep I use to have AOL rejected every time it was my ISP that was constantly blocked but don'thave that problem much now. I at one time had a statement in my auctions that if you had AOL and did not get a notice for them to contact me as there was a problem in most AOL accounts recieving my notices--- and or do Ebay checkout to find their invoice at ebay. Even when I didn't send an ebay invoice completed all they had to do was do checkout and it was filled in for them as I let them do any changes if needed.

"...somehow (even ME! for goodness sakes!) allowed a trojan to get into my computer and now I'm getting alas - TONS of spam emails every day. enough so that my internet provider actually cut off my email capabilities a couple of weeks ago until I proved that I rid myself of the nasty trojan." (GG from another thread)

That doesn't happen with AOL

"you are coasting along in pleasant unawareness that important emails have vanished without letting you know. "

Frankly I wouldn't care if I never got another email so I don't mind missing "important" ones. I turned off all ebay and PayPal notices. I don't consider seller invoices WBN/invoices "important".

Sellers can send me a gazillion WBN's/Invoices and I will continue to hit the delete button and pay through the listing (I will use third party check outs if there is a button in the listing). Blame AOL if you want but it probably is the user. WBN's are redundant if the item is properly listed and I refuse to deal with redundant emails.

They won't believe you. They never believe me. It seems to trigger some sort of uber-defensiveness. People get angry that you expect them to think and act like an adult.
PLEASE! WHO is acting like a child here? I think you AOL-bashers are expending too much time worrying about other people's business.

I am sure you are happy with your email server (I have Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo and hotmail as well) but PLEASE get over yourselves. There are a lot more important things about your business that you CAN control. Grow up and worry (if you want) about those things and let us AOL users carry on ours through whichever email client we choose.

I have used AOL for years. I may be the only one and can only speak for myself -I have never had any problems getting mail.
Of course AOL users have spam filters and sometimes things land in the spam folder. I check my spam folder if something goes missing.
Do not all providers have this?

It is just an excuse to say they have not heard from ya.
The worst is those Earthlinkers that want you to go through "screening and a pat down" to get your email through TO THEM.
I email every customer with a thank you and shipping time .
I do not go through any extra trouble or Earthlinkers. When the mail is rejected and returned with explicit direction that I MUST followed for my mail to be accepted-I MOVE ON. They know they have mail blocked and if they want it that way -fine! But do not expect me to go through a security maze to reach ya.

AOL has never been problematic for moi. I may be the only one of the 20,000,00 or so that use it, but my is service is great.
