Do look like border collies -- at least to me.

Along that same vein, I had a huge hand enhanced old photograph, probably turn of the century, of an English Setter, except I wasn't sure -- about the dog, not the age. Someone came into my booth and said that was indeed the way the breed looked 100 years ago. Helped date the piece and I learned something about breeds' evolving over time.

I believe they are a smooth collie (shorter hair). Lassie was a rough collie (long hair).

Not smooth collie. They have a very smooth coat like a boxer or a dane would have. These look like plain old tri-color farm collies before the "fancy" got a hold of them and started breeding them with extremely heavy coats for the show ring. Believe border collies are smaller and this pair seem to have long legs like a regular collie

Smooth collies don't have the same coats as Boxers and Danes--it's short and thick, not slick--but these dogs aren't smooth collies. These *may* be border collies, but I suspect they're "farm collies" which weren't purebred and didn't necessarily have collies in their immediate background (farmers bred whatever worked to whatever worked--sheepdog, bird dog, you name it; the full white collar 'n white legs pattern is genetically very strong). Collies (Lassie-type, either smooth or rough coated) haven't had heads like these dogs' in more than 100 years--the parallel planes scream "not a collie" and the one on the left is very coarse and hound-y.

It's a pretty card, whatever the dogs are. You'd probably be safe listing it with a question mark ("Border collie? old collie?". The purists in either breed may decide to correct you, but the average pet owner who collects such things likely won't care.

Thanks all! I think I will go with "Farm Dog Border Collie" or something like that. The card dates from around 1910. I appreciate the expertise.

Neglus and I can't decide if these are Boston Terriers. Any experts?

Yikes!

Ralphie notes that the COLLARS are a true fashion "faux-paws", ntm, that he wouldn't be caught deceased in the same photo with two clowns who would ACTUALLY wear such goofy headwear...

I think they look like Pit Bull Terriers more than Bostons
