I shipped a package 8 days ago..priority mail. I shipped through Paypal, and of course, had "Track & Confirm." It was supposed to be delivered in 2 to 3 days. Because this item was a bit costly, I checked on it to see if it had been delivered. It hadn't. There is only a record of the shipping label being printed! I made a call to the Post Office and was told that there IS no tracking..JUST confirming when the package is delivered.
I asked her how they even know that I even SHIPPED the package..I could just print up a label with insurance for $250..not ship it...say the package never arrived..and file an insurance claim. She had no answer for me. I also asked her why it's called "TRACK & Confirm" if there is no tracking. She told me that tracking is only for express mail. Now, I have a package somewhere between here and Alaska with no record of it ever being sent! All I have is a receipt from the Paypal site saying I printed a label. I just have to wait and hope it gets delivered.
Last November, the woman who takes my packages at the PO told me by January, Paypal was supposed to have receipts that can be printed up and taken to the PO to be signed by the worker. Has anyone seen one of these receipts?

Until the PO starts scanning in packages with pre-paid postage, we're all at their mercy.
I print my labels on line, but pay and watch them scanned in at the PO.

You are paying $0.00 ONLY for the PO to get DELIVERY CONFIRMATION upon delivery...

The fact that the BOX one inputs the eDC number in order to conform deliverey is called "TRACK & CONFIRM" is semantics ...

Maybe they should more accurately label the Box: [b]"Track and/or Confirm"

If you need TRUE TRACKING on a USPS item (because of HIGH VALUE, etc), then you have to use a method that provides...TRACKING, such as EXPRESS MAIL or REGISTERED MAIL...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Retail vs Electronic rate Delivery Confirmation™
The two rates are designed to meet the needs of a variety of mailers, making Delivery Confirmation™ a convenient and easy-to-use service, whether you're shipping catalog purchases or birthday gifts.
The retail rate can be purchased at your local Post Office™. It uses the fluorescent green PS Form 152. Delivery information is available online and by phone.
The electronic rate is for mailers who purchase postage online (for example, using Click-N-Ship®) or are capable of sending and receiving electronic files of their shipments. Delivery information is available online, and (for certified shippers) by file transmission.
Whichever rate you choose, you'll have access to the same Delivery Confirmation information.
Retail Rate Delivery Confirmation™ Service
Retail Delivery Confirmation™ service does not provide tracking or tracing of mail items.
It provides you with a confirmation of the delivery date and time only. It will also include other delivery status (e.g., attempted, forwarded or returned to sender). Retail Rate Delivery Confirmation does require acceptance scans when brought into the Post Office™. Electronic Rate Delivery Confirmation, which includes Click-N-Ship®, does not require acceptance scans.
(If an acceptance scan appears for several days it simply means the item is enroute and a delivery attempt has not yet been made). Delivery Confirmation does not include tracking of the package enroute.
Must be purchased at the time of mailing
Delivery Confirmation service does not expedite delivery.
Does not provide a guaranteed delivery time
Does not provide a signature receipt (unless an additional service receipt is purchased with it).
Delivery and/or attempted delivery information, including date and time of delivery as well as the delivery location of the item, can be accessed through the following (you will need the delivery confirmation number):
At Track & Confirm
For certified shippers, by file transmission
No signature is required for Delivery Confirmation items.
No record of Delivery Confirmation is kept at the office of mailing.
Delivery records are maintained by United States Postal Service® in a national database
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tracking information is available on the internet at Track & Confirm for Express Mail® mailpieces only (including Global Express Guaranteed®* and Global Express Mail®*). Tracking information includes various scans as the item is enroute to the destination.

Delivery status information is also available with the purchase of the following additional services:

Delivery Confirmation™ service.
Signature ConfirmationTM service.
Certified Mail™ service.
Registered Mail™ service.
International Registered Mail™ service.
Delivery status information includes information about the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery.

Electronic Delivery Confirmation (including Click-N-Ship®) may (but is not required to) include the date and time of when it was picked up or accepted for shipment.
Retail Delivery Confirmation that is brought into the Post OfficeTM for mailing will include an acceptance scan.
It does not include tracking of the mailpiece enroute.
If there is no scan event information available for your mailing, you will receive a message similar to one of the following:
"No information is available for this item. Please contact the sender."
"There is no record of that item. If it was mailed recently, information may not yet be available. Please try again later."
This does not mean that the item has not been mailed. It just means that it has not been scanned in as having been delivered.
If you are the addressee, you should contact the sender for more information regarding when it was mailed.
If you are the sender, you can check back at a later time (status information is usually updated every evening).
Additional Notes:

Regular mail (such as Priority Mail® or Parcel Post® items) can NOT be tracked or verified as to delivery status unless one of the extra services stated above was purchased at time of mailing.
Scan information for Express Mail items and mailpieces with extra services may be updated during the day; however, the majority of data is transmitted in the late afternoon or early evening. For example, if you mailed your Express Mail piece at 10:00 a.m., you may not see the acceptance scan event in the system until late that night or early the next morning.
Though delivery status of Express Mail and Signature Confirmation items is viewable on the United States Postal Service® website, the recipient's signature is not viewable online. However, the sender may request a copy of the delivery record that includes a signature by calling 1-800-222-1811.

I wouldn't panic until 5 days...for priority or 1st class mail. It routinely can take 3-5 days for priority mail in and out of here.

Also depending upon what part of Alaska it went to...we've been having periods of Denver like weather ourselves this winter....

I recently sent two thick, almost identical envelopes to Texas and New Hampshire by first class mail on the same day. The New Hampshire envelope had DC. The Texas did not. The Texas envelope arrived in 2 days. The New Hampshire envelope only showed that it was mailed for 8 days before it was finally delivered and showed in Track & Confirm. The buyer and I were both sure it would never be seen. This was during a period of good weather on the east coast so don't understand why it to 6 days longer to get to a state that is closer to me.

Actually, if you use Shipping Assistant, they do scan it at the PO because they have to in order to put the postage on. And, I have checked on packages and found that they are also scanned along the destination route as well in most cases.

Had a package last winter going to Alaska from Texas that took 6 weeks and it was also priority but it did arrive. The guy lived out in boonies so it took dog sled to get there I am joking but it might as well been sled. It arrived when they had clearance to land the plane in that region. The weather has held up delivery a bit even here in Texas this year so it might take a while even for priority mail to alaska.

Diane is correct. I also use Shipping Assistant, and my items are scanned when presented. Later that evening, the scanned items appear on the USPS system.

And, since I pay by PayPal at the PO, I receive the PayPal discount.

I have had the same problem when buying items on Ebay in which the "track and confirm" was apllied for electronically. The only thing that ever showed was that that they had beedn notified electronically but that did not mean the package had actually been mailed. Not until the package had been delivered was there any information beyond that. However if you go to the P.O. and pay the 50 or 60 cents for a DC, it will be posted that the package had been accepted for delivery.

How do you pay by Paypal at the Post Office?

Annekila - I use my PayPal debit card. You have to use the debit card as a credit card for the discount.

But the acceptance scan is no good for Paypal seller protection,it just shows you have turned the package over to your local post office.

Delivery confirmation is only good for PayPal if the package was delivered as reported by the tracking #. If it was NOT delivered, just because you can prove you mailed it, doesn't cut it. Then you need insurance. If the PO loses your package and you do not have insurance, you are out of luck.

I wish the post office would offer some type of automatic scanning machine that would scan the package as it's dropped off at the post office.
They could have afforded to do this had they not built all the over-sized post office building in the middle of nowhere.

Let's clear up one thing. It's NOT TRACK & CONFIRM.

It's ship and confirm.

I wish the post office would offer some type of automatic scanning machine that would scan the package as it's dropped off at the post office.

Actually they do. It's called a scan form and is printed out when you complete your online postage.

That doesn't really help as it's only scanned when it is delivered. What I'm talking about is something like the self-service check out lines at the grocery store

Lady I suggest that to my postal clerks everytime I go in there, they just laugh saying you know how the PO is never do anything to make things easy. Now when I have my packages ready and my postal delivery guy comes by in his little truck I give my packages printed at PP to him he scans them before he puts them in back of truck, such a nice guy and did I mention he sells on Ebay too so knows PP problems maybe that is why he scans them immediately for me. At least it proves I mailed them and when....Not that PP would give a hoot if not delivered.

Got a parcel post package today; info shows label printed, and then that it arrived at my PO at 5:58 this morning so apparently they scan here on arrival at "unit." Carrier scanned delivery as I watched.

Not true. The scan form is scanned when you drop off the packages at the P.O. or when your carrier comes to pick them up.

Common contract language

May (optional)
Shall (required)

I noticed that the International Airport in Minneapolis (24/7) stopped scanning my packages when I arrived to pay. (I use the shipping assistant but pay at the counters)
USPS system shows electronic notification and the language will change if the post office scans it at acceptance.

The airport PO will scan if requested.

From all this, I'm learning you're at the mercy of the delivery scan.

I sent a package out Priority Insured with Delivery confirmation on Jan 10th. It's destination is less than 200 miles away. It's still in transit.

Retail Delivery Confirmation is scanned when it is dropped off at Post Office, and does show that, in it's DC record.
