Opinions needed please...

What would be the best and safest means of sending a high priced item through the mail? Value is approx. $2,500.

Thanks in advance.

Registered mail, return receipt (but check to make sure it's on line trackable if you're being paid with PP, I forget). You don't mention how big, but you can do registered with first class and priority mail. I think most high end jewelry and coin dealers use this option.

UPS would be how I would do it but if it is going USPS I would send it Express Mail, Insured, Adult Signature required and then hold your breath and hope it gets there in one piece. Express Mail would provide accurate tracking, insurance, and expedited service.

birgittaw - It is only a 3 lb. collectible item. Not heavy but it is made of bisque and rather breakable.

glassgrl - I tried to get a quote with DSI and it kept coming up with a $1,000 maximum limit with USPS Signature Required shipping service???

I believe you would have to email them for a quote.

"Whether you need a $5.00 baseball card covered or you want to insure a $10,000 antique statue, DSI will take care of it."

Registered and insured is the way I would go. I would also double box and pad beyond all reason. We sold a very rare viewer for $2,500. The buyer was more concerned with not having it lost than with breakage since it was large and not fragile. The post office said there was no way it could be lost with registered because it is signed for at every step of the way.

As I have said before the hardest part of the process was finding the paper tape that was not self-stick. The only place we found it was a huge roll at Staples. Every seam in the package has to be taped and they stamp along all the seams so it can not be opened without showing.
