I'm amazed I got a message thru the eBay message system... it read suspiciously in my email, so I went to my My Ebay/ My Messages ... and there it was:
------------------------
"dear seller
i want to know fast if it's the same item:
http://64.150.160.242/ebay/item180055939379.php
mail me back soon because i'm ready to buy it now.
regards!"
-----------------------------
That ^ http:// link was a live active clickable link, which took me to a 'fake' but of course completely REAL looking 'sign in' (to ebay) page.
Within the 'My Messages', ebay tells us, "Is this email inappropriate? Does it violate eBay policy? Help protect the Community by reporting it." ........ no where are instructions on how to report it. Is that what the "flag" button is for?

Please report the eBay ID that sent you the email as "compromised". They probably spammed a 1000 other eBay members.

ok. I did just send an email to a 'contact us' link, within the 'My Messages Help' area. And LOL I will get a response within 24 to 48 hours. Woe is us.

Scary stuff out there! Last week I got two e-mails about one of my auctions that had launched a few hours earlier. EAch of them, from different people, had a link to another auction "I just noticed that this auction is EXACTLY like yours. Take a look!"
At first I thought it was some kind soul telling me someone had stolen my auction wording and pictures.
BUT I checked in My eBay, and neither of those messages was there. Furthermore, when I checked on my own for those auction numbers, they weren't in eBay anywhere.
If the messages had been in My Messages, I would have fallen for them.

Okay, I'd like to propose something radical:
Stop slavishly responding to email.
Nearly all email can be safely ignored. I should know, I've been doing it for well unto two decades now.
Get used to the idea that email will never be made safe for you. As long as you do your job right, describe your auction items clearly and completely, and ship promptly, you should never have to deal with email.

There are unique spammers out there. I got an email that LOOKED authentic from a real member and included a real auction that said I had sold something and they did not receive it. The auction number and ebay memeber were not linked, but if you went to the auction it was a real number and if you looked up the member, it was a real identity. I, of course, did not click on the links, but looked up the numbers and member separately. It was a unique new spin to me. Very clever.

Thanks for the advice, Fluff. I'll stop feeling guilty about ignoring email so I can attend to business or relax or whatever.
