or, How to (Not) Get Rich on eBay.

Click Me

I calculate a net loss of 83 cents on this listing, and that's assuming he gets his stuff and packing supplies for free.

Even this guy, who gives away the store every time he sells something, doesn't have perfect "star" ratings! Unbelievable.

There seems to be a lot of ebay store sellers like this one. The other day I went to the stores front page and picked some random sellers from different categories to see how they were doing, not a one was selling much of anything nor making any real money.

I bought 3 paperback books from a seller a few weeks ago. It cost me 4 cents, 3 cents and 24 cents. Shipping was 1.99 + 10 cents for the second and third items. I thought, "How does this person make money??" I would have had a garage sale, donated the books or thrown them in the trash. I was half expecting never to see the items, but they appeared quickly and as described. I don't get it.

I run into these sellers all the time in my category. I find a rather unique postcard, do a quick search on eBay, and find the only other one is parked in a store with BIN $.60 and $.50 combined shipping. I've started buying them to keep them off the market.

Sounds like a someone who has a problem with math or never takes the time to balance his check book.

look at his store listings-
"We reimburse $1 for every ADDITIONAL item that you buy from at the same time.

Examples: Buy 2 items at the same time and get $1 when your shipment arrives. Buy 10 items at the same time and receive $9!"

These types of sellers are killing the true business people on ebay.

I bought an ornament a few months ago, it was .99 and shipping (priority was 4.05), I paid paypal! This seller did not make anything. This ornament (Hallmark), does not usually clearance out that cheap before being destroyed and it probably wasn't bought at a garage sale but even if it was --- how does it make sense (or cents)!

Now I know that there are sites, Craigs List and yahoo freecycle groups, where these people can get stuff for FREE and then turn around and get their packing supplies for free...don't do any profit eaters on ebay and you have yourself making some amount of money. It may be a little amount but just think of how much they are selling. People want deals they don't want to pay what the items are worth..if that was the case they would go to a retail store and get it (where it is less likely to be fraudulent anyways). That is like a gas station in our town that did a one day blowout (they were closing down) where they sold their gas for .99 all day. They were slammed with people they had to close the road down in front of the gas station because the line was so long. It makes decent business sense when you concider selling 1 item for 10.00 or 500 for .10. I personally wouldn't do it that way and yes it does hurt the market but I can see some of the rational for it.
