This is really bugging me! I listed this postcard yesterday of the Farmer's Market in Los Angeles, postmarked 1969. Note the two women with fuzzy hats! I was in high school in 1969 but I sure don't remember hats like these. What in the world are they made of? I guessed mohair - but in Los Angeles??? Any one remember this fashion?

I've seen hats like these and some of them were really high fashion at the time.
Somehow that doesn't fit this picture. They don't match the outfits. These look like something they made of lace in a craft class.
Is that Martha Stewart??

I never thought of that! Eyebrows look like Martha - what do you think?

I think they were some kind of feathers - like ostrich or something.

Yup I agree with glassgl, ostrich. Years ago we bought the entire contents of the Caustion ostrich Farm gift shop in South Pasadena Ca. and we had hats, boa's there were over 60 different items all NOS and hundreds of them. One of our best finds in 40 years in the business !!

I remember these! They were "in" for a very brief time, and I don't know what they were made of.

I did! But it sold long ago - here's the card:
Edited to add - I really love Vendio image hosting! It took me about 5 seconds to find that image - the search feature is great! I must have about 30,000 images stored here and have used only 33% of total space available under my hosting plan.

Thanks all! I guess the ostrich hat craze of the 1960's never made it to Nebraska.

Oh MAN I want those display cases and chandeliers. Heck, I'll just take the whole shop.
Neglus, I think your hat style was influenced by the black hat Audrey wore when she was staring in the jewelry store window in Breakfast at Tiffany's but her's had a scarf instead of feathers.

Ltray, that is just like the shop only this one was across from what is now Lincon Park.We had those kind of show cases in our shop, we used to buy and sell them. Some were counter top ones with towers on them and curved glass, lots of floor ones with claw cast iron feet, and we even had a tall one like in the postcard. We sold some but kept the best LOL

Since it's not Martha I guess I will let the title stand: WEIRD HAT LADIES @ FARMERS MARKET LOS ANGELES CA 1969
The LA version of the break @ tiffanys hat are very UGLY! Audrey would look good in any kind of a hat:

I have a book on hats and they call this style hat sou'wester. When I did a search all I found was the yellow rain type hats. My book shows these hats with feathers / flowers etc. They were beautiful - all from the 60's too. So Hepburn!!
