"During the English Civil War the Island of Jersey remained loyal to The English Crown and gave sanctuary to the King.
It was from the Royal Square in St. Helier that Charles II was first proclaimed King of England in 1649, following the execution of his father, Charles I.
In 1663 in recognition of his loyalty to the English Crown George Carteret, Jersey's Royalist Governor, was gifted a large tract of land in North America henceforth known as New Jersey."

The Bailiwick of Jersey has been a country since around 1204. It's where the Jersey dairy cows originated and some of the founding fathers of New Jersey came from...
You must have missed that day in Geography class?

In the thirteenth century when King John of England retained posession of some of the Channel Islands after losing Normandy to what was to later become France.
Basically.

I lived in Jersey in the Channel Islands when I was a kid. We left London and went there in 1948 so it was shortly after the Occupation. I used to play in the German Bunkers and climb up the 'lookout towers'. We lived on the side of the Island that faces the Atlantic Ocean and I had a five mile stretch of firm sand beach all to myself.
School was in French so this little gal became bi-lingual in a hurry!
Of all the places I have been in the world Jersey still ranks right up there as #1 for being the most beautiful. 46 sq. miles of stunning scenery.
We had planned a trip there this September but have had to change plans and I am so diappointed but maybe next year.

Merrie: careful, some of us live here... actually very close to where Sopranos was filmed. Okay? You wanna wake up next to a horse's head or sumthin?
Sthoemke: I guess the tipoff is the "New", as in New York, New Mexico, New and Improved, etc.

Cash: I call New Joisey home, I am a Jersey Girl. I have a Philly accent hence the pronunciation due to childhood outside of the now 6th largest city in the USA.

Not a problem, I did not take it as an insult. When you are from NJ, you roll with the punches. There are many, many NJ jokes and barbs out there. I like the Garden State!! In fact where I live we consider you guys reallly New Yorkers!!

You've got me blushing now! I have to admit that 80% of us around here work in NYC (including me for 20 years, my wife still does), and the attitude survives the train ride.

Also, Cash, what teams do you cheer for?? I bet they play in the Meadowlands or Yankee Stadium. We root for the Phillies and the Eagles. You're probably exit 10 or above. Up where the Garden State pkwy is 6 lanes across and really scary, not like down in the "South" where we have a grass divider (although our governor's accident happened down here). Hey, we're still neighbors!!

For what it's worth, if I ever cheer for a football team, it's either the Dolphins (but let's keep that to ourselves) or the Eagles. NEVER THE JETS! Sometimes the Giants only because I worry about how my neighbors drive their cars when the Giants lose.
As far as baseball goes, my ex-wife's uncle had a significant ownership interest in the Red Sox. He tells me that I was the only relative who never asked him for World Series tickets. I was polite enough not to tell him that even good ballpark hot dogs could not get me to watch a baseball game. I'd rather watch paint dry.
Hockey! Now THAT'S a sport!

I figured some programmer was trying to be funny. If you search for items in Jersey, it's all 1 cent ebooks and the like.

Not to worry...when I tell people I lived in Jersey I always have to say 'Jersey in the Channel Islands, not New Jersey".
If anyone is ever looking for a great place to go for a vacation then I would recommend any of the Channel Islands, Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney or Sark.
If you want some interesting reading then look up info on Sark!
My childhood years there were idyllic and it hasn't changed too much as they restrict the number of people who live there as there is no personal Income Tax and no sales taxes on items like jewellery.
What has changed over the years is that they became a big player in the Off-Shore Banking business.
Now I am REALLY upset that we had to cancel our September vacation there!
