Yeah... but according to the NPR report I heard this morning, their total listings for the year are down by more than 6%. One wall-street analyst considered that to be significant and recommended selling the stock and investing in stocks with a more stable environment.

My take on it is that eBay as a sole company really isn't up 50%, but it's holdings like PayPal and Skype are. PayPal makes sense as many of my non-ebay sales still pay with PayPal.

I still see eBay as a declining avenue for most items and will only list likely to sell items there from this point forward.

Sounds like Meg is still blaming the brief period of stores in search for the sluggish sales:

" The company is seeking to rebound from confusion created by mixing auctions and set-price shopping formats and has taken steps to make it easier for consumers to find and buy goods in its auctions, reduce fraud and attract new buyers to eBay.

"I think it was a pretty big shock to the system that's only now coming back into balance," Whitman told analysts."

Profit is up. Number of listings is DOWN.

Mostly because of Skype and PayPal. I use Skype and love it, now it' part of eBay. Oh well, there it goes too.

What's next for eBay to buy, Wal-Mart?? LOL

Skype was profitable for the second quarter running. Registered users rose to 220 million at the end of June from 196 million at the end of March. Skype's net revenue rose to $90 million, double the year-earlier quarter's $44 million

220 MILLION??? There are only 300 million Americans and I don't know anyone who uses SKYPE (except you Bill). Is it a big deal elsewhere?

Didn't mention anything about sell through rates. As long as they get their listing fees, they are happy.

Skype is a big deal with my Australian friends and with many third-world country users. Not that third-world nations are known for having a lot of disposable income. The Skype numbers are surprising to me, too.

For Skype they count registered user names.

They got called out on this last year when they said they had 100,000,000 (4/06) users. Users online at that time was actually about 6 million.

Registered users is the key. I can understand why one would have 4 or 5 eBay accounts but why would you have more than one Skype account, other than forgetting your password (me at hotmail )

And the article: Explaining skype numbers

We use Skype, and we are in Canada. Our relatives in England use it, and missionary friends in Thailand, Indonesia and Africa all use it. It really is worldwide.

Google down severely, missed quarter badly. Trading down over $40.00 in after market.

neglus, Skype is a big deal worldwide. I call free anywhere in Canada and the US for , I think it was $23 per year. I have been on for 4 months and call all the time for zero long distance. I talk thru my computer with a head phone. I love it. When I am on, it tells how many others are on worldwide when I make a call. Usually 8 or 9 million.
