I mentioned the other day, here, that a buyer of something that a young man would usually bid on had disappeared from sight. Three messages to him/them, no response. Filed UPI. No response. Filed for FVF and left a politely worded neg.
Heard almost immediately from buyer, woman, who said she'd been called away on family emergency and when she'd returned, had put a check in the mail and hoped when it arrives (!) I would remove the neg. I responded politely that I hoped her family emergency had been resolved, and I'd let her know when her check arrived.
She sent this, which I think is rather pushy:
---"No, my family emergency has not resolved, but thank you for your good
wishes.
I see that there is a simple way for the seller to remove the negative
feedback so I will expect that to be done when you get the check."---
When the check comes, I'll notify her and tell her I'll be glad to remove the neg when she's left me feedback that she's happy with her purchase. She'll hate that, I suspect. But I have to cover my butt, right?
Then. . . I'll remove the feedback--but can I replace it with a neutral? Would you?

At this point, your "butt" is more important than hers. Yes, I'd leave a Neutral AFTER waiting a good amt of time for her check to clear and receiving her pos feedback.

Did you notice that your FB said "Seller never responded, never paid, no communication whatsoever." ? I think you meant BUYER. Personally I think you jumped the gun in leaving FB so soon in the summertime, especially for such a low ticket item. I wouldn't sweat it out for $4 item any longer - looks to me like you are headed for a mutual withdrawal.

Oh gee. Thanks, Neglus. I've done that a couple of times in the past; no one ever commented on it! Yes, I did jump the gun a little, but I was disgusted over not hearing one word from the buyer. Thanks.

No. Feedback can not be replaced.
If you do a mutal withdrawal the rating will be removed but the comment itself will stay forever.

And in order to do a mutual withdrawal, you both will have to agree that the FB left is no longer appropriate - in other words the FB she leaves for you will be withdrawn too. The comments will remain on both of your FB records.
This is the form for withdrawal:

Not to mention that withdrawal costs $$$$.
I never leave neg feedback unless I am provoked and then I usually sleep on it for a day. Currently I have 22 negs and a positive feedback of 14466. Two or three of the negs were deserved.

Anyone that didn't pay me and I have left a negative has it forever. I don't want to hear the hard luck stories that suprise always come right after you leave the negative. My bet is the post mark will be the day of the negative or the day after.

Dave: I've never been charged to withdraw a feedback. Where do you see that information?

Neg removal costs money if you go through Square Trade.

Just for your information as to emergence's, I have been in the hospital 8 times this year all 911. I had ebay listings and my wife is computer illiterate. So some of these case's are for real. I have since given my pass word to my son who sells on ebay so he can notify buyers if this happens again to me.

I sell low cost goods so can afford to be generally pretty easy going regarding feedback. Bad things happen to good people, eBay is no exception. There are also people who bid, then find they are without resources to pay for their purchase (like the fishboy who bid on my ratfish postcard). I don't want to ruin his or my day over a $5.94 purchase. Might be a bad business sense, but the last time a I got my panties in a bunch over non-payment was for a $7,500 off-line default which my business advisors assured me was a safe bet against my better instincts. People make mistakes, I do. I don't find a compulsion to protect other sellers from irresponsible buyers. It is a part of doing business. I don't really think that feedback protects sellers or buyers. It is totally subjective, unforgiving, open to wacko coots or vindictive competitors. I do my best and let the chips fall as they may.

Pixi, you've given me much to think about here. I suspect it's true that most sellers don't look at feedback comments when someone has bid. We'll probably notice, if we're looking for it, what the person's total feedback is and go from there.
If leaving negs does not help other sellers, there's no point in doing that. On the other hand, if a buyer gets 3 negs and is booted out, doesn't that help sellers by eliminating one more negligent buyer from the pool?

The negs don't get anybody booted off. It's applying for your final value fees that eventually gets a buyer booted. It takes 3 from individual sellers to boot a buyer.

Max has it right - it's the NPB strikes and not the negatives that will get a person booted (though I think I remember reading that a person will be booted with -4 FB [That's total FB not 4 negatives]).

Update on this problem: The buyer told me again today in an e-mail that she's left feedback for me and I must now file for mutual feedback withdrawal. When I checked what she'd left, it was just a comment that item was as described. Ebay had removed her rating on the grounds that she never responded to the Unpaid Item Dispute!
Jeez, now I'm not sure if I can even ask for a mutual withdrawal. I feel bad for her, but on the other hand I guess it's a learning experience for her as a buyer.

I am under the impression that I in the past when I file a NPB dispute I can close it by marking that I got paid and thus they didn't have to respond--unless it was way past the closing of the dispute by ebay. In that case I would have been liable to ebay for any refunds they made and I didn't report I did get paid for the item. Could get sticky if you got an automatic refund of fees and she did pay you and she pushes the right buttons at ebay.

Irked: I tried the mutual withdrawal of feedback and it worked, went through in about 10 seconds! I was astonished. Since I marked it as paid (finally) and ended the dispute, I'm wondering if eBay then wants a refund on the refund they gave me. We'll see! Anyway, both our e-mail pages show mutually withdrawn feedback. Learn something new every day.

You mean they haven't already taken their "refund" back? Pish posh -- before you know it - or certainly forget about it - they will swoop down and snatch it back when you're not looking... buried somewhere in the individual fees and credits you might get each month.
Of course, we don't see many credits... huh? That just might stick out when you check (if you check) in either this months or next's invoice.
