I have offered free shipping on all of my auctions. I can't figure out any way to give a discount for multiple purchases. It appears you can only give a seller discount on shipping. Since my shipping value shows as 0.00 that doesn't work. Any suggestions?

As a note, I do have better sell through rates on the free shipping items.

Assuming they are paying with Paypal, you could just send a paypal invoice with the amount you want to charge, instead of using an ebay invoice.

Any suggestions?

Under My eBay > Preferences > Selling Preferences, change "Allow buyers to edit payment totals" to YES.

It won't be long before your buyers are cutting themselves discounts, relieving you of the responsibility.

Fluff, I disagree. I allow buyers to edit the amount and very few do (I can't remember one that did). I offer free shipping on 3 or more items and have to try to catch the combined shipping orders. When I miss, they never make the correction.

I offer a discount when 5 or more items are purchased and there is no way to do this through eBay. I also allow buyers to edit the total but discounts cannot exceed s/h fee.

I refund the discount when I preparing my packing list (I found out the hard way that if I do it before I download the PP completed payments report they don't show as "paid" follogwing the discount)

Actually, I was just being snarky.

Can't see why anyone would want to offer discounts on multiple purchases when shipping is already FREE. Sorry, folks, but you're paying eBay a commission on the non-discounted sale amount. Cutting your prices on top of that is just a way to hemorrhage money slowly.
Remember what the man said about the best way to make a small fortune.

If you want to reward people for buying large amounts, put up bigger lots at a lower per-unit price.

Gee Fluffy, I don't remember asking for your opinion on my business practice, only on the mechanics of giving a discount.

I'm not stupid, I know that giving "free" shipping causes me to pay more in fees. My sell thru rate is significantly higher and more than makes up for the increased fees. I have been running a side by side test with another id and find the free shipping scenario to be the most lucrative for me.

In this case I am just trying to honor my tos since I didn't change it while running a test around free shipping. Mostly I sell one item at a time, but on the occasion someone orders several things, I'm willing to bend.

Thanks to everyone else for their workable solutions to my problem at hand.

37 sales in the last month.

Oh my, that is some impressive data set.

You're right: There's nothing you could possibly ever learn. Hush ma mouf.

Sorry Fluffy, but you have no idea about my business as a whole. No, this is not a high selling id.

Snarky? Wiseacre? Whatever....

I find that offering a multiple purchase discount and combined shipping have made a big difference in my ability to upsell the items from my store.

I take into consideration the possibility that I may be discounting an item by 10% and the probability that an item will stay in my store for 12 months when setting my store price. I never have depended on my shipping fees for income - inflated shipping would never work in the postcard biz.

I'd prefer that ebay calculate FVF on net payment received but obviously they aren't giving any indications of plans to do this. It still makes sense for me to offer the discount.

There are many different ways to slice a pie. The "lot" approach is one of them. Discounts are another. Giving away jewelry from a web site is yet another. Not every model works for every type of business. Sometimes we just have to try a little of this and a little of that to find the thing that works.

Oh right, the infamously mythical "I'm really one of eBay's top sellers, this is just a minor ID." That's always a favorite. On the Internet no one knows you're a pooch.

Hey, it's no skin off my snout if you want your auction ads to appear desperate by offering both free shipping and discounts for multiple purchases. Sure, it makes your product look like crap but hey, lookit that sellthrough.

Did I CLAIM to be a big seller? I read these boards alot, just came here to ask a simple question about the mechanics of solving a problem.

Nowhere did I ask for opinions about my method of listing auctions.

End of discussion.

You're selling old hard-to-find items to hobbyists and collectors, Mary Ann. Totally different market, totally different product.

Lego-my-Eggo here is hawking new mass quantity Made in China novelties that promote breast cancer awareness.

I want to be clear here: I don't give a rodent's heiny what Lego-my-Eggo does in his auctions. But buyers aren't stupid either. If you have to make multiple concessions to move product, people start wondering if the product is worth the asking price.

I am saying this is poor marketing practice and others should consider carefully if it's a model they want to follow.

Uh...Office Depot or Staples.
Free shipping
1-10...$10/per
10-50....8/per

Offering free shipping and quantity discounts has been here for a long time and is an accepted business practice. In fact, I expect it whether buying from U-line or you hoo.

And, I am only too happy to give my interior decorators free shipping and quantity discounts.

As for OP question: I know of no way to do this on eBay however, there are a couple of online coupon deals that integrate with eBay, but I've never used them so don't know that much about them.

Good luck!

Beth

Let's leave the you hoo's out of it.

And before you think about it... let's keep the "hoo hoo's" out of it as well.

Fluff does have a good point, even if she is quite rude in her posting.

It doesn't make business sense to give a discount on items plus free shipping when you pay fees on the full price. I could see one or the other, but not both. In the short term, you could see some rewards, but in the long run when you are trying to make return sales, you will always have to do it or lose the customer. In turn you will begin to see declining profits.

I agree with Steve in your situation though. I wouldn't leave it up to the customer to get it right. You should personally send the corrected totals in an invoice.
