I ran into a C.P.O. OMS cancel that I haven't seen before. Does anyone know what the abbreviations C.P.O. or O.M.S. mean? The postmark is on a Statue of Liberty card and may have been mailed from there or the ferry? It also has standard NYC postmarks (1949). Thanks in advance for any info.

I looked it up on
- here's some options:

CPO Campus Post Office
CPO Central Payments Office
CPO Chief Post Office
CPO Civilian Personnel Office
CPO Civilian Personnel Online (US DoD)
CPO Civilian Post Office (Canada Post)
CPO Command Post Operations
CPO Consumer Protection Office
CPO Cook Post Office (Rutgers College)

OMS Operational Management Specialist (United Parcel Service)
OMS Organizational Maintenance Squadron (USAF)

Thanks, Carolyn. I finally found a great postal glossary at askphil.org which lists CPO as Community Post Office - not sure if it applies here, though.

CPO most likely stands for New York City's Central Post Office

In college it was the student union in our post office. Big gathering place, especially for homesick students.
