I just saw on the news that a 25 year old woman answered an ad on Craigslist for a nanny job, and went to meet the parties in a parking lot, and was later found dead in the trunk of her car. A good reason not to allow buyers to come to your home, or meet them somewhere for pick-up. There are not only scammers out there, but preditors, looking for ways to meet people. Buying something on auction and then asking to pick-up would be a way for them to find victims, especially for women alone.

And there weren't predators when we only had the medium of newspaper classifieds?

My daughter knew the girl who was killed (she graduated summa cum laude from her college in 2006) and her brother is in my daughter's class. It is horrifying.

It's very sad. I wish she had told her mother that she was going to meet a prospective employer in a parking lot because I'm sure her mother would have knocked some motherly sense into head and maybe she'd still be alive today.

toybuyer: of course, there were always preditors, but the percentage of people buying and answering ads online now compared with newspapers in the old days is huge.

It is true that millions now use it but I wouldn't.
Ebay is supposed to be coming out with something called ebay local or something like that. MARty (clact) on the stores board is raving about the potential.
I would never allow strangers to come to my home and I WIll not meet them other than at the post office and even that makes me nervous.
Las Vegas is listed as one of the most dangerous cities in the USA. A man was having a moving sale and was murdered a few years ago.
Now, I donate anything I cannot ship. Tax writeoffs are good things too

Last year someone was trying to sell their car through the newspaper and was found murdered in a ditch (told friend he was taking the car to show a potential buyer).
Car was missing too. They never report follow up crimes so I don't know if it was ever found. We have an astonomical number of car thefts here anyway. Several thousand a month at one time.
Neglus: I know your daughter lives here now so please warn her to be careful. Home invasions are on the uprise as well as most other crimes and the gang problems are intensifying as well.
We got home from the airport at 1 AM last week and a car pulled into the parking lot of the apartment complex ahead of us. He went to the back and sat with lights on. I talked husband into leaving rather than getting out and a police car met us as we were leaving. We went back figuring it was safe once they were there and sure enough, they were blocking the other car. We grabbed our bags and went inside as quickly as possible. We live in Green Valley in Henderson in a very safe area too.

myfavorites - the first person I talked to when I learned of this girl's murder was my daughter in Vegas. She originally found potential roommates through roommates.com but we insisted on flying down and interviewing with her. She thought I was being silly when I told her that those ads could be ruses. I hope she takes it seriously now.
She lives in Summerlin and that seems to be a pretty safe area but of course works downtown (sigh).

Before Craig's List:
The Want Ad Killer
Harvy L. Carignan
Gas station manager
Seattle/Minneapolis
Suspected in dozens of sex-slayings spanning four decades and several Western states and provinces, Carignan is thought to have killed at least two women in Washington. He was convicted of two murders in Minnesota. He met some victims by placing newspaper help wanted ads. A map found in his Minnesota home had at least 180 areas circled -- including 18 in Washington -- where some bodies have been found.
Status: In prison in Minnesota.

I'm glad you flew down to help her interview. It not only made sure the applicants were truly looking for a roommate, but it also let them know the parents were very involved in the daughters life even if they weren't local.
Many crime victims are targeted because they are alone and far away and isolated from the family.
My daughter also teaches (first grade) at an at risk school here in Vegas. She's been doing it for 5 years now and so far so good. She works late a lot of the time getting the class ready for the next day and in the winter (when it gets dark so early) it really scares me but there have been no incidents or even close calls so far.

Amber: You base these statistics on what? Other than the population is much larger?
How about we just hear more about horrific crime because media is much faster than it use to be? People need to be more cautious of their surroundings and who and where they are meeting people. This girl did not ask for this to happen to her; however, there needs to be emotional intelligence or street smarts as well as intellectual ranking in college. My only point: Craig's List is not the offender.

toybuyer: I am not suggesting that Craigslist is the offender. You stated that we had predators using newspaper ads in the past. How many items do you offer for sale on eBay compared with what you list in your newspaper? Internet sales have become huge, and unfortunately, they are a haven for predators. When I was a child, a predator had to lurk in places to catch an unwary victim, now they can offer to go and pick up an item for sale on any internet site, or use their skills to lure people to meet them, especially the young. All I was trying to say is that especially for women alone, it is not a good idea to have a buyer come to your home, or arrange to meet them, at least take a male friend with you and make sure it is a very public place. Personally, I would avoid it, not worth the risk.

I've had local buyers come to my home and I have met buyers at other locations as well for more expensive purchases. One person I met at a rest stop off the Jersey Turnpike - but precautions were, of course, taken.
1. The buyer bought and paid for a $500 pair of lamps.
2. I googled the buyer's name to ensure they were not a known ax murderer.
3. I googled their address and found that they lived in a very upscale neighborhood.
4. I found their property record and found that they paid $950,000 for their home.
5. I met them in daylight in a crowded area of the parking lot.
6. I was able to find out where they worked and made sure everything was on the up-and-up.
Granted, just because they had money doesn't always mean they are safe, but when you ask enough questions and make sure everything makes sense and YOU take precautions, I think meetings and pickups can work safely.

Maybe there is a connection between the murder and the name of the town it happened in.
