The USPS has a holiday shipping calendar which may help you decide. I would think that sales would further depend upon the items sold.

I don't stop listing for the holidays. Everyone's off work. Many unzip their pants and settle down in front of the computer.

List and Sell... List and Sell... Sell some already listed...

I applaud any of us here who think about paying attention to the buyers and adapting to their schedule. So often, especially at a local "shop" or business level, we find people who can't have a "common sense" bone in their bodies... Like the gift store that opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. in a bedroom community where commuters are on the road before 7 and don't get home until 6:30. Then - they complain because the economy must be to blame... No - just be open when your customers want to shop.

For those who close up and don't want to sell things when it's close to Christmas -- Thank you. Less competition to deal with.

Don't get me wrong, we plan ahead and ensure that our "selling" doesn't get in the way of family and traditional holiday festivities. Afterall - where else can you make money with your pants unzipped... <smile>

just be open when your customers want to shop.

There's no evidence to indicate that people prefer to Christmas-shop on eBay during the second and third weeks of December. If anything, quite the contrary.

Remember, I've been doing this for 8 years now.

The real Christmas selling season starts on December 26.

Not only am I going to continue cataloging and filling my stores (I have to, my wife and kids need a place to put the tree), I plan on listing my basics in core.

I plan on listing right through November and December.

I tend to agree with fluffy on this, but it seems to me that much depends on what you sell. Collectibles geared more to men (and your guess is as good as mine) do the same year round, in my experience. BUT my instinct tells me that women looking to buy odd pieces of their china or other little things for themselves will level off dramatically in their buying the month or so before Christmas.

Clinton liked to have his pants unzipped while on the telephone, in front of a computer or just out in the rose garden, or even while riding in a parade.

Thanksgiving for me has ALWAYS been a very good day to have auctions end. There are many that want to get a head start on their shopping.

You will find that the first ten days of December is generally good. Then a lull until just after Christmas.

Fluff is right about the 26th. After Christmas sales traditionally are some of the best sales times of the year. They usually last through roughly the 15th of January (give or take a day or two).

I will keep typing. I may not list on ebay after Dec 10 or so... but I want to be ready for the after Christmas sales rush! Jan,Feb+ March have been my best months on ebay for 10 years now. Happy Thanksgiving all. We really do have much to be thankful for. Bonnie

Fluffy,

You must have a different interpretation of the quote you pulled from my earlier post.

Being "open when your customers want to shop" is a no brainer and applies to anyone who is in business. You could also say the best location is "where your customers are..." and that would be logical as well.

Your customers may not shop at all during that time (or at a level that makes sense for your business) - but others are.

And, while the charts you posted probably accurately depict the volume of listings, I'd be more interested in seeing a graphic of the sales volume to listing ratio during that same period. I bet it's higher than during peak listing times.

Either way, I'll take being in front of those few buyers who will be in front of their screens - with half of the competition any day. That way we can benefit from those compulsive buyers who just have to buy "something" to satisfy their addiction.

Wayne,

Great, you take the buyers you want and I'll take the ones I want. We're both happy that way.

Experience from years past has shown me that people are understandably anxious about gifts arriving on time. It is not worth it to me to offer "Get It Fast" (does anyone do that any more?). I would have to charge at least $5.00 more than the overnight rate for FedEx to make up for the nuisance factor, and at that point my affordable sterling silver jewelry gets a whole lot less affordable.

I understand that different people view this differently, and if I were selling, say, genuine Native American sterling and turquoise bracelets at $500 a pop I would be quite willing to deal with FedEx, as well as ship overseas.

Last year, I believe we closed on December 5 because our family was going on a Panama Canal cruise. (Avoid Celebrity Cruises, everyone. You should see my cruise review.) This year our family sans us is going to Tahiti and arriving home on December 24. So we are the "ground crew" as it were, picking up folks at Sacramento airport and putting on the entire Christmas experience for a group of weary travelers. I want at least a week beforehand to cope with that, and a week before THAT to recharge, so we'll be closing this year on December 10.

I've been listing on Ebay for over 9 years. If you have the right stuff, they will find you. November, December (don't kill yourself with frantic shipping) and January have all been great for me. Let's hope this year is Ho, Ho, Ho!!

HA! My goal right now, is to clean off the table and two of the four chairs. Then we can have Thanksgiving Dinner. I don't expect to sell it all, just want it identified, and stored in binders, listed, and off the table and chairs.

Thanksgiving last year was a big suprise. They say that the Monday after turkey day is suppose to be the biggest online shopping day. The week after Christmas has always been really good for me. So for me I will treat the holidays like everyday list list.

Just a few simple thoughts from a very simple mind.
