Is anyone familiar with watercolor painter Charles Henry Reinike 1906/1988
Here is an original watercolor in frame 11.5 X 14.5 actual painting 10.5 x 7
Before I tell you what I paid for it I would like to know if anyone has any idea of the value. I know the value is what you can get for it as with anything that is old or one of a kind, but I would like to know what his paintings usually sell for.

I have no idea of value but I agree it is lovely and when you list it be sure to mention his Louisiana roots. I would also describe it as a bayou scene.
Did you get it at a thrift for a dollar or so? I love that kind of discovery story.

Thanks all, I appreciate your input.
pixia, I looked all over google & read alot about Charles Reinike, but could not find anything about the value of his paintings except for one auction site that sold a few, but you had to sign up pay to get any information. You get a whole big month of looking for 29.00
Nuts to that & thanks to steering me to art.com
zippy, how I wish.
I paid 460.55
The person I bought it from paid 15.00 about 3 years ago at an estate sale.
pmelcher, something I like about the picture is you can see some very light pencil sketching here & there.

A lot of watercolor artists do pencil in a quick light sketch to guide them. Sometimes an idea will come to them all at once and they want to capture that before starting to paint. I don't think you went wrong on the price for an original painting from a known artist.

This was on the page I linked to. You have to sign in to get the actual price realized at auction, but it gives the original estimate of $1,200 - $1,800.

pixia, that painting sold for 1200.00, 13 bids.
BTW I didn't mean art.com, couldn't find anything there, I meant to thank you for the
liveauctioneers.com link...plenty of Reinike sold paintings there & very helpfull.
Thanks again for another great link, reinikegallery. I would like to know the name of the painting if & when I sell it & they should know.
pmelcher I'm glad I didn't over pay for the painting, wasn't sure at first. Not exactly a steal, but pretty good.

$460.55 is a lot to pay for an unknown watercolor, but I think your instincts were right on with this one.

This gallery is looking for his work. They may be able to give you an estimate of what they would offer as a purchase price or what you might expect to receive at auction.

pixia, I emailed the Reinike Gallery link you posted & asked if they could give me the name of the picture. His son answered, said certainly & asked for pictures & also any history I had. I told him all I knew, which is not much. I did not mention what the estate sale amount was or what I paid for it.
Yes, 460.55 was a lot to pay for especially when I didn't have an idea of it's value except that I knew C.H. Reinike was a known artist because I found him on google.
After sending the info I got to thinking what if the painting was stolen, but then it isn't all that valuable so I doubt if it was.
zippy, thanks for that link. I sent them an email with a description of the painting & told them if they would give me an email address I would send pictures.

Zippy, do you remember Mikes4x4 stash of civil war era letters, etc. he found in a chest of drawers? Just happened to be items he collected. My favorite thrift-store discovery story of all time.
