I'm sorry if I am an idiot about this, but I do not understand the significance of the item #s and why they change. I have been assigned mostly 26------ #s for some time, then they got intermixed with 25------#s. I just listed an item and it is 38-------. I guess I should have paid more attention to prior discussions, but it never really made sense to me.
What do these item number indicate?? Are some better than others for search purposes? Sorry for being so brain dead.

Merrie, it has been discussed before but we all seem to be at a loss as to what eBay is doing with the numbering scheme and what significance it holds.

This is the $10,000 question. I think the number blocks are assigned depending on which server you are on. There were claims last year that some servers were better than others. I don't know. I wonder if some servers saw more "action" than other servers and sometimes they didn't work properly because of the load. But who knows?? I recently changed from 160XX server to 160XX server and 150XX server. Then when I got set up to handle these two different number blocks it changed to 160XX and 370XX - no more 150XX. Based on how low the numbers were on 370XX, I think this is a new server. Maybe 380XX is too.

Thanks, I knew it was discussed before but I didn't understand it so I guess I just blocked it out. Now I know I am in good company.

The #'s are assigned to ebay's servers. There has been some discussion that items with certain server numbers get better visability at times, but there is no way to control the numbers, and it really doesn't matter over the course of a week.

It is also closely related to the catagories that you list in. Try and post into a catagory that isn't even in the ball park to what you are listing now and you may see that the numbers differ. It all depends upon which catagories were listed onto which servers.

That used to be the case, Stone , but not anymore. I think that is why they changed the numbers a couple of years ago. I know that there were video game and cd sellers on the 160XX server. Almost every postcard seller I know has different numbers.
