Geez! Has PayPal been down lately? I can't believe the increase in the number of payments by mail. I used to process a handful/week. I just finished processing 32!! Has anyone else seen a similar increase?

A sure way to clip some points off your stars for slow shipping.
And nothing you can do about it except ship before payment goes through.

I have gotten a few as well, and selling at antique shows, take more cash. I don't think the customers are maxed out, I just think they are getting scared of the credit card companies, and want to reduce their reliance on them for discretionary purchases. The news in the past week or so about about how Bank America is, uh, "treating" (I don't think I can use the best word here) their customers is making people wary.

Just heard from one customer, who didn't know her payment defaulted to echeck until she had already paid. She didn't understand why it did this, but I'm glad I took the time to tell her I wasn't allowed to ship until it cleared, and if she really meant to issue one. Perhaps I need to contact the echeck buyers, and offer option to refund so they can repay with credit card. However, the funds will have a hold at their bank until
a. her echeck clears into paypal
b. my refund clears into her paypal
Bother!

I've had an increase as well. Money order, checks and e-checks.
mcjane - I would never ship on an e-check before it clears. However I send the bidder a short note stating that so they understand it won't be there until the check clears.

Can't say the same. In fact, I think I went the opposite way. Both my checks and PayPal payments are down. But my Google Payments have been increasing at about the same rate. I'm at 100% international payments via Google since November and about 20% USA payments.
I couldn't be happier either.

Question for you: Original echeck received on 2-22, clearing date 2-29. Now it's moved to clearing date 3-11. Does that mean, as I think, that the check bounced the first time?

possible,if it fails to clear the first time, they will resubmit the second time.
Some banks are just not in the 'loop',takes longer to clear,it could be a credit union check or some out of the way savings banks or money market mutual fund check .
And what about foreign bank checks,it will clear through the corresponding bank?
Same can be said of credit card transaction-some obscure affiliated credit cards say plumber association of Muncie,Indiana (just an example) or foreign credit cards.

I have had some buyers on my mall site who don't trust PayPal. One said that PayPal sent so much spam that he didn't want to have anything to do with it. Say what? I tried to tell him that PayPal had nothing to do with the spam he got and not using it will not stop it.
By the by... I am not getting any PayPal or eBay spam anymore. 90% is offering to enlarge a body part I don't have and most of the rest is replica watches and a smattering of Nigerian variations and "girls" who want to meet me. Is this a new trend?

See, that's the downside of posting your picture.

I said "girls" because the from address is George/John/[email protected] but the emil starts "I am a nice girl..." You would think they could at least spoof with a girl's name.

Found out why all the sudden influx of PayPal eChecks... apparently it results from a change in PayPal's proprietary financial risks module.
This confirms our earlier suspicion that this problem was unrelated to the normal case where a customer was paying by an expired credit/debit card and their payment was converted into an eCheck.
Perhaps more alarming is news that a higher percentage of these eChecks are later followed up with a "this payment has been reversed by the buyer's bank" message. Hopefully sellers that accept PayPal will not ship before payment is confirmed, despite buyer's pleas to the contrary.
