I upgraded my son's computer to Vista and lost the ethernet drivers (and identification) in the process. My neighbor opened up the computer and was able to fix the problem. I'll think long and hard before upgrading another computer.

I've been awfully sorry I got a new computer with Vista on it. Lots of little problems, and one big one--I can no longer upload a whole batch of photos at one time to Vendio. Have to put 'em on a disk, take it to my husband's computer, find Vendio, and upload. What a pain.

If I had it to do over, I'd stay with WindowsXP.

Thanks for the info..I am staying with XP as DH who is the techie in this family is hearing too many stories similiar to yours about Vista.

I really miss Windows 2000 as it was the most glitch-free and I understood it!

My husband has Vista on his laptop, and I don't like it at all. We had to buy a new desktop a couple of months ago, and I made sure it was Windows XP, it is office, but very little different. It seems to take a long time to work all the bugs out of the new systems.

I love my XP and do not want to switch. My computer is fairly glitch free and that is good!

Roadsmith, could you set up a home network, allow file sharing, and do the upload from your husband's computer?

I purchased a new PC and a new Laptop a few months back. Both have Vista. I finally things to work BUT I hate it. I have to "give permission" "run as" or "validate" all day long .
If you have Vista you know what I am saying .

Can you still buy a new PC with XP?

I would not recommend Vista to anyone that had anger issues....... hehehe

OOOOOOOOO I know they will, in time, get it tweaked, but what about Moi?? I may need rehab before Microsift gets the kinks out.

maybe an Apple??

Fluff! Missed you!

I am tempted to get a desktop now before this one dies just so I won't have to deal with VISTA.

DELL...I have bought 6 over the past 3 years from them...NO problems so far. Recently upgraded my sons. Got him a P4 - 80GB for $300 DELIVERED...no monitor...but for that price it works great. It was one of their OUTLET ones, they go QUICKLY and CHEAP. You can search for your price point and operating system. It is mainly stuff that was ordered new and then never picked up, also ones that are refurbished.
Here is a quick sample...probably be gone in the next 20 minutes

I always buy a PC with XP weather it be XP pro or XP Home. My latest Computer was XP media and my mother board burned out, put a new one in and then Hard Drive went nutty, so I wiped out everything on the Hard Drive and made it ready for XP Pro.

A few years ago I bought the XP Pro disc from Microsoft dated 2004 and when I have a problem with the operating system I clean the old system off and download and install my Microsoft XP pro and it's like having a new computer again. That's if everything else in the tower is in good working order.

What I'm going to do now is keep this PC and have my teck build me one from a kit. It will be better parts then you get when you buy your PC complete from the store, it will be built with the specs I need and definitely it will have windows XP Pro. I have used my disc on my daughters PC also when she had a bad hard drive virus. This XP Pro disc was one of the best investments I made.

Tonimar..

I shall have to investivate that!

I agree with having a computer built, when I was in my last business I had a techie build to my specs....then I married someone who is able to build them from scratch and I love it..no excess garbage on them, just what I need and as my needs change he updates it.

My computer is built from scratch and is designed mainly for my love of photoshop and manipulations, my old computer would bind up and sometimes crash. This one has never had a problem (about a year old). KNOCK ON WOOD.

I made the leap to Vista two months ago and I've never looked back. I seem to remember everyone complaining about XP 8 years ago =)

You can disable the UAC (User Account Control) if you find it to be annoying. Here's the instructions: http://tinyurl.com/2d474a

UAC is a small price to pay for quite a bit more security, but if you are computer savvy and don't have anyone else using your computer then just disable it. I did.

You're welcome, glassgrl.

The nagging of UAC is a common complaint with Vista but, as I said, it does serve a purpose. Microsoft is accused on one hand of being lax in security and then, on the other hand, there's UAC prompting at every security turn. They can't win, it seems.

I have no complaints about Vista. I think it's getting a bum rap. As I said, I recall the angst over XP when it was first released....people swore they'd never give up Win98 (WinMe was the biggest mistake Microsoft ever made and is therefore not even worth mention. I had Me and I couldn't wait to upgrade to XP!), and now XP is the darling OS and Vista gets the rap. It's change that people hate.

Most Vista problems seem to be driver incompatibilities that can be avoided if you check first that you have the most up-to-date driver from the manufacturer's website.

well I thought I could buy a new computer and just uninstall the Vista and load my XP but I found out you can't. I even tried to Dual Boot with both but the computer sat unused for a year while I tried to figure out how to do it.

I have cable modem upstairs and this one was being installed in my kitchen. All my routers etc were not compatible with Vista - well my routers were but not my wireless thingys. I had the equipment and didn't want to buy more (a little stubborn hey?) Didn't really want to go wireless but what else could you do. Then I couldn't decide if I wanted to upgrade to Wireless N or not.

Finally I saw ZyXEL HomePlug. A brilliant solution and just what I was looking for. Even though I thought I didn't have to use a router when I bought it - you do - I can turn my wireless off and that's what I wanted.

The connection is just as good as if I had an additional cable modem line installed. I'm really impressed with it.

ZyXEL HomePlug

I will,

I tried the disable the UAC (User Account Control) It stops -validations, authorization and all that crap BUT it will not allow Dazzle and other programs I need to do business.

I have almost learn to live with the Vista --- it is a very good program. Any file, document can be found easily. No more lost files!

here's what I have. I just like it because there's no compromise on speed and I don't have to worry about somebody hacking into my network, never mind the WEP the WAP. (once I had my network provider over to check my system and they found a neighbor using my connection) Those router logs used to scare the bejesus out of me reading all the attempts to hack into my computer!

And I don't have to upgrade to wireless B or wireless G or Wireless N.

How does it work GG? Plug and play or do you have to set up a network? Do you plug your computer in just like you were plugging in to the cable modem? Do you need any other equipment?

I am going to visit my mom next Saturday and I am thinking about buying those for her house so I don't have to work in the basement office where the broadband connection is and can use my laptop upstairs where she is (and pixiamom can work at the same time if she is visiting too). My laptop has wireless but Mom doesn't.

well it's not wireless. so you just plug the wall plug thing in, it's got an Ethernet cable that goes to your computer.

then where the cable connection is, you have to have a router connected, you have one ethernet cable running from the other plug to the router, and one ethernet cable out of the router into the computer. then you also have your cable ethernet? going into the router. (something like that). it's just like hooking up a router but you have one extra connection going to the wall plug.

it's plug and play but I had to call the cable company and tell them I hooked it up and had them recognize it and turn it on from their end. it's considered a new MAC address or something when you hook up a router.

at first they said "is this a NEW router and I said no I was just rehooking up my old router" and she said if it was a new router it would be $5.00 extra a month!

there's also other brands like actiontec or something. You can also use these to hook up Tivo and Playstation and stuff like that.

I know I'm not explaining it well.
