I won an auction and received an invoice which seller stated was authentic and had been sent by her. I then paid with Paypal immediately. Now seller states that Paypal sent the payment to the wrong e-mail address and will not mail the article and wants me to get a refund from that party. She gave me the e-mail address which is the same as hers but lacks 4 numbers. Said she contacted Paypal and that is what they said I should do. She then said she would send me a new invoice. If Paypal made that mistake, why wouldn't they correct it themselves since the wrong party would not have the same seller ID and have listed that auction? I used ny credit card and the company stated the payment is still pending and will not be entered for another 5 days so cannot do a chargeback until then. In the meantime it all sounds fishy to me since I would not think Paypal would suggest I e-mail a stranger and ask for a refund. Anyone have any ideas?

Even stated that she called Paypal and a supervisor told her I should get my refund from the other party and gave me the e-mail address. This seems an odd thing for a supervisor to suggest. I suspect she does ot want to sell it at the price I paid although the shipping was double what it would really cost.
Also does Paypal just use the e-mail address when they pay someone? Isn't their more to it?

Did you get an invoice from ebay at the end of the auction? Or was this an invoice sent from the so called buyer.
I usually get an invoice from ebay when the auction ends saying I just won this auction, and I click on the paypal link to make my payment. Is that what you did?

One time a while ago I sent an invoice to a bidder and the e-mail address used by me was miss typed.
I had added some other letters to it. The item was paid by the buyer and they used this address. Paypal sent money to this address which was not an active e-mail address anywhere.
Seeing my mistake i contacted paypal to move this over to my account and so I thought to complete this transaction. Well you could have gotten the keys to Fort Knox easier.
Their only suggestion was to contact the buyer have them cancel their payment and re-bill them.
Well the buyer acted like I wanted their first born child. It took a while and after they vented for days they did as I had requested.
Paypal could care less and as far as they were concerned they did their job. The could see that the transaction was from one of my bids and the only difference was this added letter to the address , but they would have nothing to do with helping out.
I would contact this person and get some more info before you assume the worse it may be just a big mistake.

Who sent you the Paypal invoice?
If she goes to Paypal to send you an invoice under her account, and it turns out Paypal screw up her email addr, then you should show the copy of the invoice to Paypal and they can take the money away from that email addr.
we can have many email addr sharing one Paypal account, this 'wrong' email addr could be her old email addr which is no longer valid-say she switched ISP or if it were a web based email addr (Yahoo or Gmail) and she has deleted it.
Another option is to file Paypal complaint that you have not received the item and then Paypal will ask her for proof of delivery and of course she does not have any, then Paypal will reverse the payment back to your account.

Why not call PayPal instead of making guesses? Seems simple and logical, and I've always found them quite helpful in situations like this. Toll free number on the PP help page.

I lodged a claim on Paypal and yes she sent me the invoice. Seems Paypal mixed her account up with someone with the same last name ( very common name) and similar e-mail address. The receiptent of my money and apparently 5 other of her auctions stated he was refunding all in response to my claim. He was not selling anything.
I cannot believe a financial outfit as large as Paypal can be so terribly careless and expect the customer to file a claim against someone when they did the screwing up. It would be like my bank expecting me to file a claim against the indidual into whose account they were depositing my funds instead of correcting the situation themselves.

What a really odd situation and for PayPal to pass the buck on to a Seller, a Buyer and a total Stranger to everyone is beyond irresponsible of them and totally "un-businesslike".
I guess they can do this because they claim that they are not a Bank and therefore not subject to the RULES!

I am appalled at Paypal's response, it certainly gives everyone who uses it cause for concern, it seems it could happen to anyone. I have a very "common" name, I have sold to at least 3 people with the same one, and to think that Paypal could get it mixed up with another buyer or seller is just not acceptable.

Which is exactly what buyhigh should do in this case.

Apparently the individual into whose account the money from these auctions was deposited went ahead and refunded all the monies. He responded to the claim I made and seemed very annoyed at Paypal. I hardly blame him.
I just wonder if this is an isolated incident for Paypal or if it happens often. I doubt a regular bank or a brokerage house would function in the same manner. Certainly Paypal could match the seller's ID and the auction numbers with the correct seller if they wanted.

To stonecold13. I could find no way a buyer could cancel their Paypal payment so soon after an auction closes. I can see why this is not allowed however. Just imagine all the buyers who develop buyers remorse. One has to file a claim first through Paypal.

I have never heard of Paypal making a mistake like yours, are you sure it is not your seller who makes the mistake?
May be at one time she did have an email address which now belong to someone else.

No it was Paypal. Her email address was similar to the guy who got the auction monies. Same server and same last name used in the e-mail address but she had added 4 numbers to the last name and he had none. So there should have been no confusion on the part of Paypal.

Very strange that Paypal made the snafu. I can understand if the field was truncated, but that would affect the server name, not the user name. Also strange that Paypal couldn't correct their error without your participation. According to other posts, they haven't been shy in docking funds on accounts in the past.
Edited to add, a rare occasion when I agree with Hwahwa. I'll bet the user inadvertently made the change some how. Earlier, I posted a complaint that eBay had changed my primary shipping address to that of a complete stranger. After much detective work, I realized that it was a shipping address I used to send a gift to a customer, several years ago. How it was switched to my primary address is still a mystery.

It happens to me as well,I never have my item shipped to the shipping address in my Ebay, but one day I looked and found someone else shipping address.
I just figure someone had hacked into my account.
Ebay,Paypal,Yhoo etc all use outside consultants to do programming,in the early days of Paypal, there was this rumor its system was compromised due to some outsiders knowing too much.

You do it directly from the PayPal site. If you are trying to do it from ebay, then that's your mistake.
