my new dell catalog says June 18th is the last day you can get XP.

I think IBM was also offering XP but I'm not sure.

Do you recommend Dell?
I would like to have a new XP.

Wish I'd stayed with XP. Vista has been a real challenge. If I were starting over, I'd go with XP. My husband still has it on his computer and it works like a charm. For one thing, you can upload a group of photos into Image Hosting. With Vista, you can't.

P.S. Dell has been our computer of choice for 15 years. It's dependable.

I like my Dell. Wish I'd bought a laptop.
They have a Vostro 1000 for $399 (tiny Hard drive and not much Memory) and a Vostro 1510 for $599 - better specs.

The cheapest Latitude D530 is $529.

As for desktop they have a Vostro 200 Mini Tower for $329 or Optiplex 330 for $419.

My Dell desktop is really easy to work on & upgrade since parts are cheap on Ebay.

(these are all Dell Small business and anyone can buy Dell small business)

I bought a new PC and laptop a few months back -- both Vista.

Gave the XP to our son, wish I had kept it, and bought him a Vista!

I am thinking of grabbing a new XP before they get gone.
Never owned a Dell, but will look into the site.

"IBM does still offer XP"

Where are you finding IBM personal PC's?

They SOLD all their PC business to the CHINESE company LENOVA about 12 months ago and no longer sell PC's to the public...

"Today, these two visionary companies are united under the Lenovo name. With Lenovo's landmark acquisition of IBM's Personal Computing Division in May 2005, the new Lenovo is a leader in the global PC market, with approximately $13 billion in annual revenue, and products serving enterprises and consumers the world over..."

I've been very happy with the SONYs I've owned -- GREAT bang for the BUCK and very reliable...But, they provide virtually NO handholding, so, keep that in mind. And, my ACER laptop is great...

Only LEMON I ever had was a DELL...Everytime I turned it on, it turned itself off

Twas pulling teeth to get them to replace what was obviously a bum machine...

And don't get me started on my Apple IIc...

by jove deur - that's it!

OK tom - IBM/lenova

they do have a very highly rated laptop though. I will probably buy one next time as my next door neighbor sells them and can give me her friends and family discount.

I had a computer guy in today because I was having problems with my new computer, and he told me that the use of XP has been extended, and now they are looking at an alternative system to Vista. Not sure if that is all true, but that's what he told me.

that 200 slim tower productivity package costing $449 looks like a great deal & shipping is free:

Got a Latitude D520 on closeout from Dell. Works perfectly. Don't forget to order your machine with extra memory. It doesn't cost that much more and later you may wish you did.

Dell does a little trick eBay sellers can learn from. I didn't catch on until I bought a second computer from them. They quote a shipping date about 13-15 days out from the date of purchase, then they actually ship much sooner, so you are surprised and delighted when it arrives so soon.

In the customer service biz this is called "setting the customer's expectations." Then you exceed them. It's proven to generate repeat business.

I love Dell and the one time I needed support a guy drove 120 miles round trip to fix my computer in my home and while doing it showed me a few tricks to speed it up.

Just inherited my daughters HP laptop with Vista...uggg. She got a new MacBook Air. She is trying to get me to change the home computer to Apple.

Will I like it? I've never used one. Thanks for the tip on XP.

I had problems in the beginning with my Dell, but it all worked out and I love the machine. You are better off going through Dell Small Business. Your tech support will be the US. If you go the consumer route, your tech support is in India and that is extremely frustrating. When I need a new machine it will be a Dell. This one cost nearly $2,000 so it will be awhile before I can buy another one.

Fluffy,

Further to your point, I frequently see people getting the fastest processor available and then skimping on memory. At least 99 people out of 100 are not regularly choking the processor (that is, for 100 people who don't only use Internet and email), but I see lots of PCs that are memory-bound. Their PC is crawling while running Photoshop, a browser window, Word, etc., while the disk is furiously trying to create virtual space.

1 Gig should be the absolute minimum today with 2-4 Gig a more reasonable amount.

fluffy: I really agree with you about stating shipping times. Because I mostly ship from Canada to the US, I tell buyers that packages can take up to 3 weeks to arrive. Some people write back and say that it is a long time, and I tell them it can be a lot quicker. It is only a small number that take that long, but when they are quicker I get comments like "arrived much quicker than expected". At least with a warning, buyers are not expecting quick delivery of packages, so are not upset when they take a while to arrive, but very happy when they arrive quickly.

Will I like it? I've never used one

The learning curve is gentle, and besides, would you like being able to ignore all those ridiculous virus warnings people are always sending? How about the constant upgrades? Do you find having to use an aftermarket program to protect your machine from the bad guys amusing?

You'll like it. I have both systems here, but the XP Dell now runs linux and has found it's highest and best use as a file server, never going anywhere near the internet. Nothing wrong with the machine, LOTS wrong with the OS.

I think if you buy vista you can downgrade it to xp. I recommend switching to Linux and forgetting about all that virus, spyware and malware crap.

Tony.

In a world without walls or fences who needs Windows and Gates?
