A friend is finally liquidating her late mother's estate items. The mother was a real collector BUT neglected to give her daughter any "history" of the items. She thinks this is a Native American woven blanket...is it? If it is, does anyone know what tribe might have created it? Thanks, as usual, for any help. I'm going to the library next week but thought I'd check here first before adding my carbon footprint to the environment...

Your item is a serape. It is usually Mexican. It looks really old. You can check out serape on Ebay search and come up with lots of listings.
We are from Arizona, and see these quite a bit, old and new. Yours is old.

Thanks so much, "davidsmom"...I'll check them out. Decided to forgo the carbon footprint and just got back from the library to do some research...No luck as our smallish local library doesn't have a lot of reference books on the subject. Appreciate the info. Thnks again, davidsmom...Just checked the eBay listings and am pretty sure that's what I have. One question...many of the items referenced "Saltillo"...what does that mean?

I remember that one... pretty spectacular! As I remember, that one had plain red and white stripes (or maybe black and white)...unfortunately, nothing like mine. Similiar ones currently on eBay do seem to sell...although nothing NEAR millions...more's the pity...sigh!

I just googled "Satillo" and apparently it's BOTH a tile and a town in Mexico. Just another example of what we all can learn here on this board! Maybe Satillo tiles are made in Satillo?

This is not an indian blanket. Your serape is a Saltillo type, from Mexico. Looks to be old. It may be wool but many are cotton. I have both kinds. The pricier ones are wool and the central motif is sometimes silk. Yours doesn't look like silk. Good new ones are still made but lots of the cheap ones are acrylic and are a dime a dozen.

Thanks all...appreciate the info. I'm pretty sure mine is wool and I do know it's old. The older ones do seem to do pretty well so I'm hopeful. Thanks again for all the help...
