This person wanted to buy this table & chairs from me listed on craigs list. I agreed he could send the check and once it cleared he or his secretary could pick this up...this morning I get the following email. I am very suspicious. What do you think?
Good day Joyce ,
Thanks for your usual response
and wedding wish.I am glad to tell you that your check has been
mailed out to you and you would be getting it soon. But am afraid there
is a little problem which i was made to understand by my secretary.she
made an error and mailed out a check of $2125 instead of the expected
$125.its a problem i think you could help me solve easily as she has
been sacked instantly. This is what i want you to please do for me,once
the check clears, cash the money, then you deduct your initial money for
the item from it and kindly help me send the excess fund remaining to
my mover the same day to make up for other transactions taken on my
behalf and also to facilitate picking up the item. Also take the sum of
$100 to cover up for any inconveniences this might cause you.I hope
you would be trustworthy enough to help me solve this problem amicably
as i am counting on you.
please get back to me as soon as possible to know if i can count on
you to do so.
Do have a wonderful day ahead,
Darren.

Sure it's a scam but you could have a lot of fun with it.
Play along with him. Don't cash the check, of course; it's probably a phony cashier's check that'll bounce higher than the Empire State Building. But tell him you've deposited it once you receive it. Get his hopes up. Be sure to find out who he wants the "excess fund" sent to.
Then call the police.

Maybe you can have some fun with this - see if the police could be there to hand the funds to the "mover".

I was pretty certain it was a scam. I will (a) report him to Craigs List and (b) report him to the police. I bet I will never get the check because unless I agree to do this he won't send it. I am not sure I want to get involved with him or his mover even with the police here as they can't live with me right on and I don't know how dangerous these people are.

Did he mail the check to your home address?
Edited to add, oops, didn't see your last post before I posted, OP. I'm glad you are thinking of your safety. That was my concern too.

He said it was mailed this morning. I have never had a problem with the local craigs list so didn't think a lot about it when he asked for my address.

The daughter of a friend of ours had just the same thing. They were very short of money, and she put her guitar on Craig's list, and had a very similar message. She ended up sending the guy $2,000, which she lost of course. I say NEVER send money back from a transaction, if it is a genuine mistake, they can re-send the correct amount.

You are right of course. Tell him you will mail the check back to him upon receipt.

Sure it's a scam & if it wasn't he would put a stop payment on it in a split second.

I emailed him and told him I would return the check to him and he could send one for the correct amount if he was interested. How much you want to bet that I don't hear from him again or that I won't get the check as he was probably waiting to hear from me before he mailed it.

Well, no point in going to the police then.
He'll just try again with the next person who has something for sale, and perhaps succeed.
There's also no point in reporting him to Craigslist. "Darren" isn't his real name and he used a throwaway email address.

I just went through this 2 weeks ago but never received the check. I told him to make out the check to the Huntington Beach Police Department as they would handle this transaction.

Mamachia..That is a good answer. He told me the check had been mailed but I think he was waiting for my reply before he would have mailed it.
I really appreciate all the input. I was pretty sure it was a scam but like to get opinions from all the folks on here.

That is the truly one sad situation about Craigslist. Tons of idiots scammers. They seem to be targeting large items as when I posted a lamp, they didn't bother.
But all in all, CRAIGSLIST RULES!!! NO FEES COMING OR GOING!!!

I've had these scammers contact me. Such a waste of your time. Now when I post things I mention cash or credit card only.
