I haven't yet installed SP1 out of fear of what might happen Has anyone here installed it and now is NOT having problems with it?

My computer has been a bit cranky lately, and I'm wondering if I should install it now.

I installed SP1 about a month ago. Did not seem to have problems but sometime around 10/30 my system started acting flaky. I tried to do an MS Update and it would not load. (This was about the time that MS warned about the new virus)

After the update failure, all of my Restore points were deleted, my firewall keeps turning itself off, Windows Defender has to be manually turned on after a boot, there are mysterious files appearing in my Users directory and other weird problems. I had to completely disable one of my user accounts because it became so corrupted.

Microsoft is providing free support for Vista right now because it is so screwed up. I filed a problem report with them on 11/4 and we are still working on it.

Unfortunately the free support is via email so it has been back and forth with the "try this" junk. My system is so hosed at this point that it is limping along.

Microsoft is providing free support for Vista

They should be paying you -- you're doing their beta testing.

LtRay, you are describing a path identical to one I went down a few years ago. I had a serious virus. Microsoft India was of no help. I had to reinstall the OS and wipe my hd clean. Try to save as many files as you can on another device. You have my genuine sympathy.

Fluffy, I agree MS should be paying me to troubleshoot their buggie software but I accepted that the risk when I chose to buy a cheap computer loaded with MS instead of a an expensive Apple computer. When Apple releases a $400 laptop, I decide it is finally time to learn the quirks of Apple software. I have used Apples in the past and each platform has its plus and minuses.

Cheryl and Toasted, are you running multiple user accounts or do you just do everything from the Admin account? The recent problems appear to be related to multiple user accounts.

And a note for everyone running Avast on Vista, be sure you are running the newest software version or Avasy may corrupt your registry during VDB updates.

You could just get a cheap pc and delete windows and install Linux at no adfditional cost. You'd be surprised how easy it is to use. And it runs great on older and slower machines.

In a world without walls or fences who needs Windows and Gates?

Hello,

From what I have seen on the support side of things, is that the hardware is more to blame for the issues people have with Vista than the Vista OS is itself. (outside of incompatibility issues with older printers and other misc hardware.)

A lot of budget PC builders know they will sell a lot more $500 laptops than they will $1400 desktop machines, but unfortunately running Vista OS on a machine that only just barely meets the minimum requirements is like expecting dragster performance out of a Geo Metro.

Apple does so well because they won't allow anyone else to provide hardware for their OS, so they know enough to make sure any computer that is running their OS meets their 'ideal' hardware requirements and not just the minimum. It's part of the reason why Mac's are generally more expensive (not selling bare bones systems and being the sole provider for most of the hardware.)

Vista is a fine operating system, just don't bother upgrading to it on an older machine if your already running XP on it. I would personally only switch to Vista if I needed a new PC anyway and even then id get the best hardware for my money and not worry about brands since they are all just bits and pieces of other companies stuff anyway.

You really do get what you pay for in the middle of the range PC market, so buy your own preferred experience.

Note also that the next version of Windows will be out already in mid-2009, so while I wouldn't hesitate to get Vista right now if I needed a new computer, I would probably wait until then to upgrade if it was just something I thought was 'nice to have.'

Regards,
Chris

Hi Christopher,

I did not go to Vista willing <g> My old system had died so I had to replace it earlier this year. Was not in the mood to do a lot of shopping but had read enough to know Vista was a resource hog so I did purchase extra memory.

LtRay - It's single user. Vista is on my Dell laptop so I'm the only one that uses it.

I agree with Christopher! I'd only put it on a new machine. My laptop is only three weeks old and it was built to accommodate Vista. So far. My printer is tied into my home network so I don't have to hook it directly to my laptop to print. The only program I have a problem with is Quick Books 2004. Seems I need to upgrade to a new Quick Books, which isn't happening anytime soon.

This entire thread seems to be proof to the old adage, "you get what you pay for".
