I just got this message sent outside of ebay's system. It is pretty confusing and is exactly how he wrote it.
"wife got money order sent it out last week if not there by thursday i will pay by pay pal by any chance are you 2***e and e***e that bidded on jersey cause 33% of time ebay said you delt with each other and there is no feed back for either e***e or 2***e on either feed back list and by ebay that is not allowed to up prices"
I asked him for a better explanation, but I know what he is getting at... something I would never do. I guess it is a legitimate question, but where would he get "33% of the time ebay said you delt with each other"? In the 8+ years selling on ebay and probably over 10,000 transactions conducted, this is the first time I have ever been asked that.

after looking at the bid history of the other bidders I found that one has a feedback rating of 192 and the other has 59. i know ebay masks the identity of bidders during the auction, but it seems counter productive to do it after the auction ends.

That's because it's next to impossible to detect shill bidding now that eBay is hiding id's. I assume e****e or 2e*** could mean different people on different transactions and that's why he might think you are in cahoots.

I just sent him this reply that I hope clears up any of his concerns:
Hi there. I reread your message and I think I get it now. I have never heard of the bidders you are asking about, and I don't know where you got the "33%" information from. Can you tell me, because I would love to know.
Ebay masks the identity of bidders for auctions now to prevent fraudulent bidders from pretending they are the winning bidder in order to get the item that they lost. This was a problem many years ago where someone would lose an auction, then send payment via Paypal claiming they were the winning bidder. If the seller didn't catch it, they would ship the item to someone else and the winning bidder would be out of the item they won.
Since you are the winning bidder I have no problem sharing with you the real identity of the other two bidders. I have copied and pasted the bid history below. This was taken directly from the auction page.
I understand your concerns about shill bidding, and would never consider doing it. I've been selling on ebay for over 8 years in varying capacities. I list all of my opening bids at a price that I am willing to sell the item for.
thanks for your question.

tell him to sign out of his ebay account and then go back into ebay and look at the auction. he won't even recognize himself.
I did this once when I didn't realize I wasn't logged on and thought I didn't win. It wasn't g****l it was e****e or something. I went OH NO my bid didn't go through!

Yikes - what a way to ask a question!! If you didn't explain it - I doubt I would have ever understood what the guy was saying.

I think ebay is hiding bidder id's to prevent shysters from contacting successful and unsuccessful bidders and try to 1) redirect payment to their account (they pretend they are the seller) or 2) sell the same or similar items (which they may not even have depending on the level of scumbag-ness) outside of eBay.

I have a related question. For quite a while I have made my auctions private because other sellers were contacting my bidders with lower offers. Is there any point in still having my auctions private?

amber- probably not, b/c the bid id's are not visible to anyone during the auction.
personally, i don't mind ebay keeps their id private if it helps cut down fraud. i guess it can go either way. non-winners can scam a seller to think they won the auction, and other sellers can identify bidders to sell their stuff to while an auction is going. it makes sense, but you would think that the final bid info would be available to both the seller and high bidder. everyone else can take a leap. lol.

what still confuses me is the winning bidders "33%" comment. i hope he explains that one, because it seems quite odd. where on ebay's green earth would he get that from???

This may be were he got the % - can't say for sure. You see this when you click on a bidders name (or e**e) after the auction is closed. I think it only applies to the one listing but he could have misunderstood:
Bidder Information
Bidder: w***r( 36Feedback score is 10 to 49)
Feedback: 0%Positive
Item description: RARE Vtg FOSTORIA AMERICAN ART GLASS PUNCH BOWL w/STAND
Bids on this item: 5
30-Day Summary
Total bids: 10
Items bid on: 3
Bid activity (%) with this seller: 50%

Translation:
Bidder thinks you are shill bidding because there is another bidder (with no recent feedback) that placed 1/3 of their bids on your auctions.

exactly what i was thinking. another classic example of ebay's failed system. give people too much info and they'll hang themselves with it.
The auction ended at 6:30pm on Sunday. The first bid came in Sunday at 1:24pm and ended up being the 3rd highest bidder with a proxy of $55.01. The winning bidder came in with about 45 seconds left and placed his proxy. Then the second highest bidder came in and placed their bid at $75.50. Apparently the winner set a proxy even higher than his $76.50 winning bid.
The 2nd highest bidder has placed bids on auctions by 4 unique sellers and the third place bidder placed bids on 2 unique seller auctions. I can see how he interpreted the info, but he should have looked at the bigger picture.

14 days... and still no payment from this guy. I've emailed him twice in the last 3 days... no response.
Obviously I'm closing the dispute... but what will be interesting is if this guy leaves feedback claiming he didn't pay b/c he thought I was shill bidding my auctions.
Gotta love the "new" ebay.
Anyone remember when people used to sell on Prodigy's classifieds? It took 15 minutes to long online, and then 2 minutes for a page to download... but it was peer to peer transactions. I miss those days.
