Have been reading Caroline's post and Google jade. There it said to see if it is cold when you put it on your cheek (facial). It is cold. It is a horned scarab netsuke (pronounced netsky).
Its about 2-7/8" long

I have seen some stone (turquoise, jade )netsukes coming out of China lately, search Ebay netsuke and you will find some.
Glass is colder than jade.
Lets hear what Dave has to say about this piece, probably dyed serpentine?

dont mean to be a smartass but soapstone is very soft and easy to carve, the result would be a better looking scarab! not like this one.
