There will be special eBay announcements on Tuesday, 4/14/2009. On his Thursday radio show, Griff mentioned that there will be special help boards similar to the one used for the announcements regarding the elimination of checks and money orders.

What will be announced?

I have no idea. However, the latest Vendio notice might contain a clue.

" ... Given the expected increased adoption of GTC for the new 30 Day Fixed Price format on the live site, ... "

There must be more, because ebay will be using a help board to answer our questions about the coming changes.

Further, in his post on the Seller Central board, Griff, states: "It's been a very busy week here preparing for Tuesday's announcements."

Anyone have additional thoughts?

This is also from Griff's answer to a question on Seller Central -

"
Major Announcement

One more question

are we getting closer to the "major announcement?" and when will it be?

days? weeks? or months?

Days. As we announced at the last Town Hall, from here on, we will be grouping releases and changes to features and policies into two or three releases per year (two this year) and announcing them in detail sixty days prior to release.

Watch the Announcement Board on Tuesday morning. "

So, this will be a "major announcement."

I have a feeling those 'free' pictures in some categories are going to add up to fee increases. FVF is now 8.75%, I bet it goes to 10.0%.

Sounds like an increase in GTC fees for sure but like Bill said there must be more to it.

I think if I have to go in and edit anymore listings I'll just scream.

My guess it is related to the 90 minute group survey they are conducting on the evening of the 14th.

It is by invite only. I know because I was invited. Hopefully I can let you all know what happened later.

If FVF goes to 10%,they should refund the listing fee.

Reminder from Griff in his posts of 4/13 -

" ... Tomorrow is a news day at eBay. Be sure to watch the Announcement Board early tomorrow morning. Also, we have a Town Hall on Wednesday at 3:30 and of course, the eBay Radio show tomorrow at 11:00. "

Excerpt from Ina Steiner

eBay confirmed it would announce a new dispute process tomorrow and said there would be no changes to fees. Spokesperson Usher Lieberman said eBay would take a more active role in resolutions that would make it simpler for buyers and remove friction between buyers and sellers.

"Our goal is to stand behind the transactions on eBay no matter the payment method and make a long term investment in the customer experience and the eBay brand."

AuctionBytes has learned that, in disputes found in favor of the buyer, eBay itself may actually issue refunds without waiting for the seller to do so. This would be a radical change for the company, and something to which many sellers may strenuously object. It's not clear whether eBay will give sellers less time to respond to claims or how it will collect from the seller.

"remove friction between buyers and sellers"
If you ask me ebay is the one that put the friction there by giving the buyers all the power. Looks like they will give them more now.

which they did for me last week. I had opened a dispute and eBay called me and said they wanted to settle the dispute and they did - that day, that minute. said they didn't want any "unhappy buyers".

that was one of the highlighted things in the pop-up *opt out* survey I took in the new search experience.

"The move to end its run with Skype comes a day after eBay was hit with a sell rating from Collins Stewart analyst Sandeep Aggarwal, who worried that there were no signs of "fundamental improvement" to support the stock's recent increase.

In particular, Aggarwal argued that eBay's core auction business is in decline, this is causing both a loss of market share and an erosion of its margins"

Ebay already stands behind the buyer too much. This one guy purchased a couple of lots. He then put them up on ebay for more than he paid me, and didn't sell them. He complained to ebay they were materially different, and Ebay said the guy gets a refund after he ships them back. It is crazy, he basically worked the system, found out he couldn't resell and now gets to return the items to me (which may not sell as high as they did 2 months ago, on of these is educational software) - completely ridiculous. What is even crazier is that the paypal complaint was filed more than 45 days after he paid, and they still are going to make me refund. My only hope is the guy is too much of an idiot and doesn't return it to me in time.

Elimination of third party checkout. Beth is correct. Apparently, ebay did not feel that the elimination of third party checkout was important to announce. They decided to let Ina do the task.

"Sellers who use third-party checkout solutions will no longer have the opportunity to display branding, cross-sell, up-sell and other merchandising opportunities at point-of-sale."

Here is a link -

I am concerned with the loss of branding. With each passing day, I find ebay less relevant in my future plans.

Hello,

Please see the following eBay announcement for clarification on the AuctionBytes article that incorrectly stated that eBay is eliminating third-party checkout.

Oops Ina ...still gotta love this line in the eBay claification: "Please keep in mind that the definitive source of information about eBay is eBay. You can find accurate information about any planned changes through this Announcement Board and through emails, calls and other official communications from eBay."

Yeah right...since when? Why do they think people have turned to blogs for information??

Nathan, thanks for the link. I suspect we all knew that third party checkout was to be modified so that -

"Sellers who use third-party checkout solutions will no longer have the opportunity to display branding, cross-sell, up-sell and other merchandising opportunities at point-of-sale."

In that respect, should we believe that the quote is correct?

Further, this is a letter purportedly received by a ProStore owner, and posted on the ebay stores board.

"April 14, 2009
Dear Valued ProStores Merchant:
Our records indicate that you have enabled eBay Checkout Redirect on your ProStores Web store. We wanted to provide information on how eBay's new Third Party Checkout policy will affect ProStores' eBay Checkout Redirect functionality going forward.
eBay will be phasing out Third-Party Checkout service
eBay announced today that as of June 15, 2009, they will only allow Third-Party Checkout through vendors who have updated their checkout pages to meet specific design and functionality requirements. Among the required changes, eBay has eliminated the ability to cross-sell and up-sell items from your own Web store in the checkout flow.
How this affects ProStores merchants
ProStores has opted not to make these required changes, but we will continue to support eBay Checkout Redirect functionality through at least July 15, 2009.
We have decided not to make the required changes to our checkout pages for two reasons:
1. eBay is limiting cross-sell and up-sell placements in Third Party Checkout to your other eBay listings only. As mentioned above, you would no longer be able to display cross-sell/up-sell items from your ProStores Web store.
2. eBay will completely eliminate Third Party Checkout completely some time in 2010.
As a result, ProStores has determined that the investment required to make these changes would be better spent on other higher priority, merchant-requested features.
You may continue to market your ProStores Web store on eBay by including a link to your store on your About Me page. You can also encourage your eBay customers to shop on your store by including your ProStores store URL on emails, packaging slips, business cards, and other promotional materials. And if you are not already doing so, you can still sell on both eBay and your ProStores Web store more efficiently by enabling Product Sync to synchronize your inventory between eBay and ProStores so items are not double-sold.
We will send you reminders starting one month prior to our official wire-off date, which at the earliest will be July 15, 2009. At that time, ProStores will no longer support Checkout Redirect on new listings, and all live eBay listings will be updated to disable Checkout Redirect. This will result in the checkout for all eBay listings being completed on eBay.
Regards,
The ProStores Team "

Hello,

susanc - sorry for all of the confusing information. At this time you *will* be able to continue using Vendio checkout tools.

There seems to be some confusion over what might or might not happen "sometime in 2010" - but at this time you will be able to continue using your Vendio checkout tools.

Overthrow ebay plans:

First, set up an auction format site for peer to peer interaction and purchases.

2nd, Offer free postings for everyone (this gives sellers the ability to keep their costs down while the site grows). After the 3rd year (when you have billions of auctions on your site), start charing selles a nominal fee, along with offering an annual fee system (again cutting down costs for sellers).

3rd, team up with a payment system that isn't Paypal, like Paymate, Google Checkout, etc. and make your money with payment processing fees during the first few years.

3rd, spend 100 million dollars in advertising the site, especially during the holidays. You have to beat eBay into submission with advertising. Get people (buyers and sellers) to the site.

So simple, a caveman can do it. lol.

Hello Beth,

That will become more apparent once all of the changes are approved, but first on my list would be better control over the messaging that appears in checkout and it's content. (and weather or not you may (or may not) choose to provide details on other means of shopping from you in the future, sign up for mailing lists, things of that nature.)

We'll know more about how we can maximize what we are left with as we get closer to the enforcement timeframe.

Regards,
Chris
