Have you seen the new announcement on eBay. Sellers in certain categories will now be able to accept checks and money orders - unfortunately I don't have a car or a boat to sell. I must be missing something because I sure don't see the reasoning behind this policy.

By any chance are books and collectibles in that category, too? (Just dreaming. . . . )

More like a nightmare than a dream! Categories are motors, business and industrial, real estate and "everything else - adults only."

I'm getting more enthusiastic about local pickup sales.

You do it in a public place, cash changes hands, then the seller cancels the transaction. No harm, no foul, the only expense is a listing fee.

It's amazing when you think about it: eBay in its repressive fervor has managed to set commerce back about 20 years.

Think about it - would you sell a car on ebay and accept paypal? Ebay must have seen a large decline in listings for cars and real estate to make them make this change.

ebay get fees with paypal. ebay doesn't make money with checks or money orders. That is the reason for the policy. High value items mean more profit for ebay.

But how can you prove online trackable DC when someone comes to your house to pick up a car or a boat or a plane?or even a piece of machinery?
A few years ago there is this guy who lived in a mobile home somewhere and sold DVD/CD on ebay,he won a vehicle on Ebay and went to the seller house to look at the item.
Then the two went inside the seller house and he used seller PC to make a paypal payment.
The transaction went through ,no problem, the fund came from his proceeds selling those DVDs.
Well, then he skipped town without shipping the DVDs and Paypal reversed the payment.

I got a money order this week (I will take them when a customer asks) - I remember going daily to check my mail and coming back with a stack of envelopes. Now, it is 1 or 2 a month, maybe.

Paypal is convenient, but so expensive compared to taking a check or money order.

But no more excuse like check is in the mail.
Also there are fake postal orders and money orders, sometimes there is nothing wrong with the money order, but the issuer went under!
