I get Kovel' newsletter and here is a tip
HAND SANITIZER
In an emergency, hand sanitizers like Purell can be used to remove tarnish on silver. Be sure the cleaner is non-abrasive, unscented, and contains no aloe.

And exactly what kind of emergency requires one to remove tarnish from silver?

I've pulled out my silver flatwear to set the table moments before guests arrive for dinner only to find that the salad forks have tarnished! That's an emergency!
I guess it would be just as easy to polish with silver polish but as I recall, the last time it happened I found that the silver polish had dried up (lid not on securely). It's a good tip! Thanks!

Tip from Max40---
Buy a pretty pattern of stainless flatware and you'll have no surprises.

Not from Kovel but here another one.
If you collect silver - alway carry an eraser with you. It will take the tarnish off as well and show the maker's mark more clearly.

LadyJewels. What a wonderful tip! I just tried it and it works like a charm.
I shall be adding an eraser to my supply of goodies that I always have with me. Thank you.

You're welcome. I've used it myself with good results.

I agree with Max!
Anything silver is a pain in the ass!
BTW....Cleaning shiny dust jackets of books is another good use for waterless hand cleaner. With a small, slightly dampened area clean the dj and then polish with a dry cloth.

Well, I always have hand sanitizer in my bag but now I know I can use it for more than cleaning my hands when I leave Thrift shops and Yard sales!
I love these 'helpful tips' threads.
I just received some tips for using Bounce Fabric Softner sheets.
Tuck one in your belt during mosquito season. Lay a sheet where there are ants to chase them away. Apparently they also repel yellow-jackets.

I do have a nice set of Stainless (Reed and Barton 1800) but I force myself to clear off the dining room table (usually my ebay store and shipping center) and use the "good" china, silver and crystal every now and then. Silver flatware is kept in a "tarnish-proof" chest but it isn't foolproof. I wanted my daughters to know which fork to use when they went out in the world and how to set a table properly. The lesson was completely lost on one but the other is a junior Martha Stewart.
As the store has grown larger (more than 10,000 postcards now with another 2,000 in various listing stages) the clear off task has become quite daunting - it has to be a major holiday with lots of guests or I don't bother. It would be nice to have the dining room back.

My friends think I am a very strange person ( actually a lot of people do!) I am at my happiest when I am up to my armpits in water and Twinkle Silver polish.
I used to have a lot of silver things just sitting around my house doing nothing but I must admit that I have been buying pewter lately and am adjusting my thinking and not cleaning it.
I also like to set the table nicely for company and one couple always phones to tell me not to fuss over the table....I try...but I just can't help myself. I think it makes the food taste better!

I just could not resist jumping into this conversation. In a world where people eat in their cars out of styrofoam boxes and paper bags, where children eat in their rooms or in front of a tv with or with out parents... what a lovely thing it is indeed to set the table, use my silver and eat together. I can't say we do this every night but, once or twice a week and certainly when entertaining.
Mary Ann my daughters both can set a table properly and I'm proud of that fact. They may not ever be invited to the White House for dinner but if they were they would know which fork and spoon to use, when.
neil great tip LOVE IT! I'm off to a pile of S. plate trays to see if it works on plate. For some unknown reason I have a "thing" for trays??
