I picked this up at auction the other day and have no idea what to call these stones - are they just 'hardstone' or are they semi-precious - I have no idea where to start with these - the largest measures 1-1/2 x 2 inches with the smaller ovals measuring 1 inch in length. The metal setting has no marks. Any ideas?

They look like a variety of Agate. However, you might want to check out eBay's jewelry board. There are some very knowledgeable "joolies" there that would love to help you out.

My first thought was "jasper."

I'm no expert, I just like rocks. They all look like some form of chalcedony to me - most look like they are some sort of jasper. I think I see a few brecciated jasper (pigmented chips among clear chalcedony) and I think I see at least one bloodstone (dark green with red spots of iron oxide). Lovely necklace. Edited to add: I also like it because the stones do not appear to have been heat-treated to "enhance" their color.
