I've read and re-read the upcoming insurance changes. Maybe someone can clue me in. Will ALL of the insurance options now disappear (ie: recommended, included in shipping, etc.)? If I'm preparing auctions NOW for launch after 22 September and put "insurance included in shipping), will eBay launch my auctions or will I need go go in an revise each one? Am I permitted to even mention the word "insurance" in my listing? Why oh why does eBay make what should be an easy process so difficult? Thanks for any enlightment...

Imagine you are running Nordstrom.com and you ship a package to the customer and an email follows thanking her for the purchase, would you mention anything about insurance?
This is what Ebay wants us to behave, like a professional retailer such as Nordstrom,Nieman Marcus,Bestbuy without charging the higher shipping and handling fee and the respectable profit margin which no one seems to be able to realise on that shitty venue!
Sorry if this does not answer your question, may be you should try meditation and yoga!

My question dealt with the technicalities of the process...not the wisdom (or lack thereof) of the insurance issue. But thanks for the yoga and meditation suggestion. Can anyone out there answer the original questions?

I have never posted so I hope this comes through. I have been wondering about your question also and I was researching this topic re: the new insurance mess and found the following in the Discussion Forum on 7/27/09 at eBay. Someone had asked:
Do I have to revise all my listings or will the insurance options all be taken out by eBay?

[email protected] replied:

No you do not have to update your existing listings, but you will no longer have the ability to include Optional or Required Shipping Insurance in new, revised or renewed listings. However will be required remove reference to purchasing optional insurance in your item description. Adding "insurance included" in your item description is fine if you've folded it into your item price or shipping and handling costs.
If you would like to update your existing listings, tools are available now for bulk editing.
I hope this answers your question.

This was the most I could find out about it and I guess this is the way it will go down.

Thanks...that helps. As I get auctions ready for post-22 Sept. launch, I'll continue to check "insurance included" and keep my fingers crossed. Appreciate the help...

I am going to go out on a limb and check 'included in shipping and handling' and self insure (refund if problems) those that sell under $50.00 and bite the bullet and pay the insurance myself for those over $50.00. I know I can't mention self insure but hope doing the 'included in shipping and handling' without actually buying the insurance (the effect would be the same, I would refund but there would be no hassle with the Post Office and the percentage of breakage and lost items has been very low for me over the last 11 years) will be all right with the powers that be. Adding it into the price of the item would probably price me out of the competition and adding it to the price of shipping would also be detrimental. I got a complaint today that shipping and handling was more than the item, sorry but I am not lowering my measly .50 cent handling. She got the item for the first low bid, I wonder if she had to pay more for the item she would complain? Of course she dinged my stars!

May be not,not if some of your competitors riase prices to cover insurance.

I am going to do exactly the same as pmelcher.
In fact that is how we have always handled it unless an item sold for over $100 then we paid for the extra Insurance ourselves. 99.9% of our items sell for way less than $100.00.

pmelcher - isn't that the way it always is - the bottom feeder are always the first to complain??

I don't think I'm going to say anything about insurance at all anymore. I just had to edit every listing I have on 2 ID's and I'm afraid if I say anything ebay will come back with something else next week that changes it again. I may address it in my EOA notice so it can be easily changed in the future.

bottom feeders complain... ain't that the truth.

i'm in the midst of searching for a new laser printer. i read reviews on one site of a Samsung printer. the first person to review complained about everything...

"I only paid $30 for the printer after my rewards were redeemed, but even then its not worth it"

"Printer jams with cheap paper"

"Printer doesn't work well with non-OEM cartridge"

If you weren't such a damn cheapskate you might actually enjoy your life a bit more b/c you don't have the hassles of fixing your low end electronics that you treat like crap.

FYI SHAG:

I bought one of those $99 Samsung laser printers years ago. Samsung told me that it wasn't repairable after a paper jam. Of course the jam happened after I replaced the toner with the authorized $60 cartridge the first time.

Samsung knew that thing was crap and deserves every bad review it receives. Manufacturers should be responsible when bringing products to market. Don't blame the buyer.

I will never buy another Samsung product.

neglus- The point I was making was that most people gave it a good review... however it was the person who used the cheapest accessories like thin paper and aftermarket catridges that complained about it not working.

I have used samsung printers for a very long time. I have one sitting next to me right now that is 4+ years old. Reminds me of my Volvo 240s. They run like a tank. Rarely have there been any problems... but this one is getting old and the manual feeder isn't working like it used to. It won't get retired though... I am going to use it as a dedicated label printer once I find a replacement.

Of course, I have used older Samsungs which work quite well. The problem I have right now finding a new printer is getting one that isn't so flimsy that they break after a month or so.

If you have a suggestion for other b/w lasers that have a small footprint, are reliable and don't have the drop out paper tray (like the HP 1006) I'm open for suggestions. I won't consider a color laser as the toner is outrageous. I saw a nice HP color laser on sale for $150... the 4 cartidges it uses however cost $200 to replace and I am sure you can't use those if one toner is out. We used to have a Xerox that required all toner to work.
