I think this is BIG news:
http://tamebay.com/2009/11/paypal-x-dev-con-spawns-facebook-shopping-mall.html

This is where you set up a Facebook Store:
http://www.payvment.com/

You can set up a Facebook page to promote your eBay business (or web store) as well. EBay makes it easy to post one of your listings on FB using the "Share" pull down on each item page. I post links directly on my Facebook page and that feeds Twitter

I have been playing around with a Facebook page for my eBay business and even posted a link on a postcard collector FB group - offering a buy one - get one promotion (so far no takers). You can promote your page on FB with a "pay per click" ad. You can target the PPC ad to appear to only the user profiles you select (ie: I could target to people who state that one of their interests is collecting postcard.)

Anyone else using Facebook or Twitter?

This sounds very interesting and I think I may take some time to set this up for one of my categories.

Nope. I don't have time for that nonsense. I'm too busy selling.

I've never been on either one and I didn't really want to ever go there but I guess it can't hurt to check it out.

Neglus - your little grey assistant has the same brown nose as my little Tiger does. His feels like velvet and he love to have it rubbed. Your assistant has beautiful marking just like Tiger. Is he/she a special breed?

ebabes...I haven't been on either one but my family tells me I am missing out! I keep telling my 23 yr old grandaughter not to put personal info on hers but it's like talking to the proverbial brick wall. They are the ones who are supposed to be the techie generation but they still don't get it that once something is on the internet it is there 'like fooorevvvver'.

I guess I can give it a try after all I was the one who said I would never own a computer either!

Neglus, is there anything we should watch out for or not do based on your experience?

I am still learning about FB for business. As Fluff points out - it's hard to spend a lot of time on the social networking end of business when you are busy selling on eBay (and in her case, a website or two).

Facebook really is nothing to fear. You can even set up your id so that no one can search and find you if you want and you always have the choice of allowing someone to see your photos and friends and comments etc ...

I set up a business page under my personal id and then I set up an id for my business - probably will set up the "Page" under my business id or maybe that is where I will set up (if i decide to do it) a web store.

Herbscraftsandgifts is a great FBer - maybe she will stop in and give us some ideas.

So far the page has only a handful of fans and I am not sure how to get more.

We're talking about kitty cats, I hope.

Here's the thing about the magical mythical social media sites.

You are one page in what, 100 million pages. A raindrop in the ocean.

Whereas I can take 45 minutes out of my busy day, design an email to be sent to one of my subscriber lists, send it and be pretty sure that before the day is out over 50% of the people who received it will read it and at least a few will buy as a result of it.

See the difference? Facebook should be called Face-in-the-crowd-Book. Who's going to care you're on there other than friends and family? Whereas my email lists consist of people who *asked* to receive emails from me. Had to double opt-in, in fact.

There are only a few spare hours in the day. I must spend them marketing to people who are interested in what I sell.

Facebook, Twitter, et al have been hugely oversold by the pundit class -- which consists of people repeating as gospel tidbits heard from other people. You go to trade shows, you hear this stuff all over. For awhile it was video that was going to save us all. Then it was Google Base and later, Google Checkout. Now it's social media, but this too will pass.

Amusingly, I'm now seeing people who could never figure out how to make their own websites profitable rebrand themselves as social media consultants. They actually expect people to hire them.

I'm on FaceBook and quite active. I use it mainly to keep in touch with family and friends I rarely see. My eBay auctions and Avon business are both advertised in a side bar and I have gotten Avon sales that way. It doesn't take any time at all to set up. It's easier to set up than MySpace.

Now you can buy Avon from me from anywhere in the world.
