My cat walked across my laptop and the screen dimmed. I know there is a setting somewhere to brighten it back up but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help. I have a IBM thinkpad/

Gosh...I miss my cat! She used to do things like that.
I really have no helpful suggestions but your post brought a tear to my eyes and a chuckle as well.

I have 4 settings right on the bottom of my monitor, one of them increases and one decreases brightness. I don't have problems with my cat thankfully, as he weighs over 20 lbs, but my little grandson, almost 2. As soon as your back his turned, he is on the computer, and you can find a dozen sites opened, setting I didn't even know I had added, and others changed. He is obsessed with the computer! He knows all his letters, and shouts them out as he hits them.

I googled it and you have to hit FN and Home at the same time.
otteropp I let my cats walk all over me and my computer and would miss them if they weren't here.
We have one cat with some mental issues that would walk over my computer all the time so my husband build a little cover for keyboard - now she sleeps there. lol We have a new kitten that wants to play with her when she's sleeping there so he climbs under the cover directly on my keyboard. Now I'm missing the s i = & backspace. The missing backspace is driving me crazy. Time for a new computer.
