I have this great song postcard depicting Uncle Same and a female dressed in skirt made of Union Jack with word "Canada" on it. Is this female a national symbol like our "Uncle Sam"? Does she have a name? Thanks!

I can't help too much but can tell you that the current Maple Leaf flag was adopted in 1965 and prior to that we had the Union Jack.

As I was to immigrate from England in 1967 I think they felt they had to be ready for me and give me a different flag than the one I was used to!!

This is the first time I have ever seen that lady and I have a feeling she is just a generic type of gal.

Maybe a Canadian who has been here longer than me will be familiar with her name if she had one.

Here is the songwriter, the A.H. after the Copyright. The Song was called 'Yankee Grit'

Words to the song at the bottom:
"Sammy oh oh oh Sammy for you I am pining when we're apart
Sammy when you come wooing there's something doing around my heart".

The copyright of the postcard is 1905 (after Queen Victoria). I don't think she is Columbia as she tends to be garbed in stars and stripes and not Union Jack. Perhaps she is just a personification of Canada and the card represents their affection for one another?

Perhaps she is just known as Lady or Miss Canada. Some interesting old political cartoons here:

One of the one's towards the bottom gives some insight into the evolution of her costume.

One of the reasons I thought she might be Lady Columbia is because Britain referred to the North American continent as Columbia, not just the US.
