I had someone offer me $40 for an item that I had in BIN for $65. I was going to take the offer but before I could they went in and used the BIN of $65.
Next I got the following email "I will be paying tomorrow. Does my offer of $40 stand? If not, I will pay full amount."
I'm not sure what to do now. At the very least I would want her to make up the difference in FVFs. Is that unfair?

Easy one! Tell the customer you would have declined the offer of 40 bucks. Thank them for realizing your bin of 65 was a fair price for the item.

Ditto alldings - easy.

i would simply send a message stating that you do not take offers on auction listings and thank them for the purchase. if it was a fixed price, i would say that you don't take offers for fixed priced items (unless you have a best offer option). if you have a best offer option, i would simply tell them that their offer was too low and invoice them since they already agreed to the $65.

I would be inclined to tell them that you were going to reply to their offer but they hit the button too quickly. Then say that your reply would have countered them at $55 and hope that works for them.

That way you will get $15.00 more than if you had accepted $40.00 and they will pay $10 less than the list price.

That way everyone gives up something and all should be happy!

OMG - otteropp That is exactly what I did. I really wanted to sell the item so I figured that $55 would be a good compromise.
The sad part is she sounds a bit flakey so I may never see the payment!!

Otteropp and ebabe that sounds like the perfect response! Hope she isn't flaky and pays right away. I am sure she will feel like she got a good deal since she said she would pay full price if you didn't accept her offer.

Great! We must have been on the same wavelength!

I also have a feeling she will surprise you and pay!

She wrote me this morning wanting to pay on Jan 2, 2010.
I don't think I will ever see it. Funny how you can spot a NPB a mile away. lol

Well...maybe she will or maybe she won't!

How will you handle this one?

I'll file on the 3rd if she doesn't pay on the 2nd. She has wasted enough of my time.

I'd file immediately. As you said, she's wasted enough of your time. Besides, a email from eBay may just prompt her to pay.

Would you consider asking her to pay $20.oo now to enable you to hold it for her until January 2nd?

I told her the 2nd was OK. I know - I'm a softy. It's not that big a deal as it is something I didn't expect to sell fast anyway.

Hey you old softie , just in case she doesn't pay, remember that eBay has shortened the time window to file for a NPB and get your FVF refunded...maximum time after auction ends is now 32 days to open dispute and 36 days to close.

ebabe....no, I don't think you are a softie!
Many times a little understanding goes a long way.

I don't give up easily on people either but just thought that she may feel more of a commitment if she had $20 in the pot.

Which is why she asked to wait until January 2nd to pay. On that date, time to file NPB is over. When was the purchase made?

It was on the 2nd so that is cutting it pretty close
I think I may do like otteropp suggested and tell her I need a $20 down payment.

"32 days to open dispute and 36 days to close"

January 2nd is the 32nd day of the transaction. This woman is just playing you. I doubt she will ever pay you.

Email her and simply tell her that you made a mistake and that you can't wait until January for the payment. And, then file the NPB.

Unless you have an unadvertised Lay-A-Way plan.

I wrote her and let her know that I needed the $20 down. If I don't hear from her in 24 hours I'm filing.
Yeah I think I was played on this one.

Well It's a Christmas miracle. She paid the $20 so I don't need to worry.
The worst thing that could happen is that she doesn't pay the balance but the $20 will more than cover my fees.
Thanks otteropp for the suggestion.
I don't mind losing a sale but paying ebay the very high FVF on top of that - bites!!

That is great news! I don't think she will walk away from the $20 and I think she will pay the balance.

People surprise us sometimes!

She's been in the hospital and won't be able to pay until Feb 2. but she still wants the item (which is a vintage white rabbit stole from the 50's/60's - a really must have if you're in sick and in debt).
I'm not even answering her email anymore. Thanks again for the $20 suggestion.

Well if a person is receiving visits from the Royal family whilst they are in hospital then it is obviously essential that they have a white rabbit fur stole. I am surprised that you didn't know that! LOL...just kidding!

Well, I am glad you were able to cover your fees at least.

Came home the other day and there was a message on my answering machine from her.
Still says she wants the cape but can't recall how much she owned etc etc.
I emailed her a reminder so I guess she isn't just going to go away.
When did I sell this? 2007 wasn't it???
