My daughter and her husband live in Fallbrook, CA. The night before last, thieves took their lawnmower and power and pressure washer from their detached garage. Their dogs never heard a thing. Now that they know what is in the garage they will probably come back. My SIL put the baby monitor out there so they will hear anything if they do return. Clever eh?

Very smart idea! What a shame that the dogs didn't hear anything. Maybe they should sleep in that garage for a while; are they big ones?

After we had our house burglarized we had more secure locks, alarms and outdoor lights installed. We have a storage shed for lawn equipment, generator and gasoline. That area is also well lit and locked. Since the thieves came in by breaking out a basement window, we had those windows replaced with heavy glass bricks.

If my dog happened to be outside, he would just make friends with the burglars.

Remember when we could leave the house without locking the door?

No Adele - they are smaller and they can't let them loose because of coyotes. They live up in the hills. I suggested they keep their keys where the car alarm is nearby and if the baby monitor makes a noise, then set of the car alarm. The cops told them there has been a rash of robberies and they steal lawn equipment.

I think the night noises coming through the monitor would just cause me to loose sleep. The bad guys are not likely to return. Good locks and outside lighting are there best prevention. Some dogs are very watchful others are not. Nothing came within 200 yards of our house without Jake the Lab letting us know.

We had our house broken into the day after Thanksgiving a few years ago. It's a terrible feeling. Like Helen's dog, ours would befriend the intruder if the intruder met up with him outside. Inside is another story altogether. He's very protective in that sense.

The baby monitor is a clever idea. I don't think I'd sleep very well since every little sound wakes me up. We put motion detector lights outside. They're so sensitive that they come on even when a car drives down the street.

Unfortunately, the problem in our neighborhood comes in the form of old abandoned homes that thieves break into to get the copper pipes. The result of that was a house explosion about 1/8 mile from my home. It shook the entire house! Two days later, a strong odor of gas spread throughout the neighborhood. A house on the next street was leaking gas because thieves stole the pipes. Fortunately, the fire dept. was called by just about everyone in the neighborhood and the problem was rectified immediately. I think I'd prefer they break into garages and take lawnmowers! But, in this economy they take what they can take.

And that includes possible assault and loss of life. When I returned home to find that our house was burglarized, I opened the door to find heavy table legs that the thieves had brought up from the basement and placed on my coffee table. The police officers who responded to my call told me that those table legs were there to use as weapons against anyone who might arrive while the burglary was in progress.

In our case, the big bad burglars were identified as teenagers who managed to commit this crime in the middle of the day.

Wow, to break in during the day is real desperation. What a scary experience!

Edited to add: My son was home when the house was broken in to. Fortunately, they broke into the in-law suite in the back of the house and my son was in the front of the house. You can't hear anything up front. The back, though, is where all Ken's expensive music and computer equipment was. My son had no clue anything had even happened.
