I just spoke with a Fed Ex representative regarding our shipping account. We discussed numerous issues including rate discounts, volume, and declared value for shipping "Items of Exception" such as collectibles.
I pulled the Fed Ex service guide and on page 135, it states these items are limited to $1000 now. Items with no declaration of value or shipped in envelopes are limited to $100.
There is also a Fed Ex program referred to as DVX that shippers have to apply for to have up to $50,000 in coverage for collectibles or anything else under the "Items of Exception" clause. My understanding is that the cost is 70 cents per $100.
this would have saved me about $50 last year to ship my lamp. sure, we can argue that Fed Ex will do what every other shipper will do... deny liability. As shippers, we just have to pursue it further to get our way. Nothing we don't do when we have any other type of insurance claim (car, house, business, etc).

Thanks for info. I always use FedEx for large heavy items. I've only had to make one claim and it was processed smoothly and professionally. My experiences have been good.

I'm glad to hear it went well. I have never had a claim, but was concerned Fed Ex would handle things much like UPS... deny liability.
My only bad shipping experience involved someone who used my account to ship something to me. He printed out my instructions which clearly stated to ship a 20 pound box via Ground, went to Kinkos and they shipped it Express.
Fed Ex made it right in the end, but it had to be escalated to a supervisor. I never give my account number for shipping any longer. Too much risk when shipping it out of my control.
