I have been very busy over the last 3 days with a moving sale at our store, packing merchandise, and meeting with the new landlord to make changes and finally sign the lease. During this period I received the following:
1st message from bidder: It seems that the post office has messed up with this...I got a notice when I tracked the delivery that the post office was "unable to deliver" and returned the item to you....I do not know why they were unable to deliver and contacted my post office who is looking in to this...in the meantime, if they did in fact return it you, this was a big mistake on their part. I do want (and paid for) the clock...so please let me know if it gets returned to you . So sorry about this...I really am looking forward to getting that clock!
I reply that I have seen this happen before and not to worry. I would be happy to reship it.
2nd message from bidder: I called my post office and learned the DID send the clock back to you...they said it was missing some postage. I was upset w/ th post office because I would have paid the missing postage myself, as I did NOT want this returned!! Can you please send it back as soon as you can?
I reply that I just bought a new scale and perhaps I didn't set it up correctly and that I will check it once it is returned. I did check my scale and it is working perfectly. I rechecked the weight of another exact piece and it weighed just as I shipped it. So, I check the status of the delivery confirmation and see:
"Item Refused by Recipient".
Hmmm.... odd. I know postage is correct, I know that I shipped it to the correct address, and I know it arrived at their post office. No idea what happened to this package, but I wonder if it was either 1) mis-delivered to a wrong address and refused or 2) the buyer refused it forgetting they bought something. Either way, this is an obvious issue. Anyone else have a problem like this? Any advice?

Could very well be the wrong address or something stupid like that.
I just had UPS stating that my buyer had moved when she had confirmed her address to me the day before the delivery attempt. I called UPS and made them try again - this time it was delivered. The sad part was that they didn't even leave a notice. She was in the process of moving in - not out. They assumed too much.

I have had this happen a few times. My PO knows me and redelivered the items, no cost after they checked that the address was correct as written on the package.

no clock yet. the thing that is odd is that the tracking states "refused by recipient" but the recipient says they called the post office and the post office claims there wasn't sufficient postage. don't you think the PO info would state something other than "refused by recipient"?
to make matters worse, as stated previously, our business is moving this week. so, it may now get forwarded and delayed further. go figure... when it rains it pours.

Ok, so I went to my post office today. I got the package. Talk about an odd chain of events. It first arrived in Skokie, IL and apparently the courier sent it back because it was short $1.54 postage for weight. Problem was, it was under 3 pounds which is what I paid for. But this is where the story gets even more amusing. Upon its return to Portland, it was weighed and measured. My box was oversize by about 1/2 inch. USPS tried to collect over $23 to reship it (this is above the $10+ I already paid).
Had the post office in IL delivered it with postage due, the person would have paid $1.54 to get it and I would have refunded it to them, no questions asked. But instead, USPS sent it all the way back to Portland and tried to collect $23+ from me. I told them I would weigh and measure it myself before paying more. So, I did and found it weighed 2 lb 15 oz. Under 3 pounds, however the package was 1/2 inch over the 1 cubic foot dimensions. Ugh!
I emailed the buyer and told them I would send it via Fed Ex Ground. No problem! Did the label, and it was less than $9 to ship it to their home with insurance and tracking. USPS wanted over $33 for 1-2 days less time, no insurance and crappy delivery confirmation that doesn't give accurate information... as I said in my original post.
Before reshipping it, I opened the package, all was ok. Repacked it with a bit more packing and it still only weighs 3 pounds on the dot... weighed on 2 scales.
