Can anyone tall me anything (or where to look) for information about these Basketball wax packs? The only info I've been able to find refer to the "tall boys" and these are not the same. I have a box of these wax packs. The box is marked "1969-70" and it's by Topps. Each pack has bubble gum by O-Pee-Chee. I've searched "Topps", "O-Pee-Chee" all to no avail. Each pack is 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. Any info/guidance is greatly appreciated...thanks in advance!

Have you tried the Beckett Annual Basketball Price Guide for info?

Didn't think of that...didn't try Beckett but just e-mailed PSA to see if they could tell me anything...Thanks for the suggestion!

I guess the real question is, what do you want to know?

I used to be a sports card show promoter back in the 90's. I started collecting cards in 1978, however no longer get into them b/c of the hoopla behind grading, the absurd amount of cards printed, and tons of sets issued by each company for each sport for each year.

I can tell you that O Pee Chee was the Canadian distributor for Topps. O Pee Chee handled the hockey line, but also distributed the other major sports in Canada. Unfortunately, from what I remember, O Pee Chee cards were worth less than Topps, however that may have changed considering O Pee Chee were printed in lower quantities.

By the looks of the box, these are American "Topps" cards. There are some great cards in those packs, the issue is whether the cards in great condition or not. The pack you show looks quite loose, which amongst collectors would be of great concern. Just do a search for 1969 and 1970 Topps basketball cards and you will find some worth quite a bit.

You'd probably do better selling them by the unopened pack.

Thanks, shag...You must have read my mind because you answered the questions I have. Yes, the one pack pictured is opened but the other 23 in the box are still tightly closed. I'll do some more research but will likely sell them one at a time. Appreciate the help and info.

It is a 1974 Topps Basketball box and pack.

One of each on ebay right now:

I mainly dealt with baseball and football cards, so I am not good recognizing most years of basketball cards by simply looking at them.

Oddly enough, my experience with basketball cards is that they are still considerably undervalued vs. baseball and football. I don't know if that will change much as time goes by and the popularity of the NBA continues to grow. I see some of the cards getting some hefty asking prices... but I'm not seeing much of those selling.

Ironically, I am now more an NBA fan than MLB or NFL.

Actually, my box of packs aren't the '74 packs (although the top of the box looks the same). None of mine have the "Collect all 264 cards"...On the outside of my box is "Extra scratch-off game card in every package" and the date on the pack is 1969-1970. I heard from PSA who told me they didn't do appraisals but referred me to a dealer so will see what I can find out. Thanks for the help...

I find it odd that PSA would refer you to a dealer. Mainly, it seems like a conflict of interest. PSA who grades cards should be sticking to grading cards, not referring people to dealers.

One of the reasons why I quit the sports card business was because of this. Beckett, who has produced price guides since the early 80's also began grading cards. Ironic that the same company who grades cards, prices the cards, and most likely also buys and invests in cards.

It is the 1974-1975 season box and packs.

The 1969 and 1970 copyright dates on the box only refer to the copyright dates of the NBPA and ABAPA logos.

Thanks sthoemke...These do look a lot like mine...The only difference is that none of the packs has the "Collect all 264 cards" AND the box does not have the "Collect all 264 cards" on the outside front panel. The back panel has "4 Seasons...4 reasons...and 4 drawings of different sports on a blue background. Does the fact that the box and the packs have these small differences matter? Other than that, those you mentioned and mine look the same. Thanks for your help.

AH HA! The mystery is solved! I just googled again and apparently there are two versions of the 74 wax packs. One is the "Collect all 264" one and the other is the "Scratch Off version"...Obviously, mine are the "scratch off" version...Thanks so much for the help and info...appreciate it! Looks like I'll do better selling them off one at a time...

The "4 Seasons...4 reasons" probably refers to the fact that Topps had licenses to produce cards from all four major sports leagues: baseball, football, basketball and hockey.
