I just got an email from a lady in Turkey that purchased a pair of 9 AA (narrow) shoes from me for $65 plus $21 shipping.

She said the shoes are lovely but are too narrow for her. I checked her purchase record and she purchased another pair of shoes that were 9 medium.

Why would you buy a pair of narrow shoes if you wear a medium.

She said she will pay for return shipping but wants to know if there is anything else that she needs to know?? I think she is trying to get me to say I'll refund her purchase price plus original shipping. I'm not really willing to do that.

I'm wondering is I should do the Fluffy thing and just tell her to return them or
should I lay it on the line and say I don't plan to refund the original shipping?

If she files a claim - given her email - I think it could be a case that I would win.
Why should I have to pay $21 because she can't read.

Any experience here?

You are just assuming she wants her original shipping back.

I agree that she should have realized that she couldn't wear a AA width shoe before buying them, but I don't see anything in the email that suggests she wants you to pay the shipping.

I'd just reply with something along the lines of I'm sorry the shoes didn't fit. Please return them to:
Ebabes
Ebabes address

Upon receipt of the shoes in the same condition that they were sent to you, I will refund you in the amount of $xx.xx.

That way you make it clear up front how much money she'll get back, before she returns them to you.

Cherishedclutter has a good point, same condition,if she has stretched the shoes to the point you cannot resell or been out for a walk in those shoes or she has athelete foot, then dont bother to return them.

She may be looking for you to offer her a reduction in price for her "to consider" keeping them.

I would also go with cherishedclutter's email and try to expedite a wrap up.

Yeah - I took cherishedclutter lead and just sent the email stating that I would refund the $65 as soon as I received them back in as shipped condition.
Guess we will just see. She is pretty new to ebay but still the size was in the title so I don't see how there could have been any misunderstanding.
It's interesting that if you offer free shipping and they return an item - you are just flat out of luck.

Ebabe, you are right re free shipping, have to make sure you made enough on the purchase price to cover shipping.

My TOS re returns (except if I made some kind of error), i refund only purchase price, no refund of shipping in either direction.

Have only had 2 cases of returns just "because" and I did not refund shipping & I had no problems.

In your case, you have the size stated on item description but in many listings you will have to hunt for the information such as condition, size ,color ,we have to wade thru lines and lines of terms and condition ,or worse something about the seller, like history of their life starting from the day they are born and how much their parents pampered them.
(This is how they end up selling on Ebay because they ended up with so much junks!)
Ebay ask a question penalises the buyer ,not that we dont read but the information is just not there,a picture of a dress looks blue but the seller said white,or size medium, with no exact measurement,or does the item works?a watch runs?coffee maker makes coffee, camera and pc ?

One other possibility. We lived in Ankara, Turkey for 3 years because my husband was sent over there by his company here in the US as a consultant for the F16 on the Turkish Air base.
Could there possibly be a language barrier?
She may have thought AA meant medium, A narrow and AAA wide.
Just a thought.

I'd like to give her the benefit of that as well but the Item Specifics show
Width - Narrow (AA N)

I wrote her and told I would refund the $65. So far I have not heard a word from her. So now I don't know if she will return them or not. She would be better off selling them herself but I don't want to suggest that at this point.

She may have realized what "narrow" is, but "AA" would mean nothing unless she's lived or shopped extensively in North America. European shoe sizes don't use the same lettering system for widths so to her "AA" could mean a quality grade (if A is good, AA is better) rather than "extra narrow".

And having ordered medium widths previously doesn't mean much either. In spite of what shoe manufacturers think, shoe widths are NOT consistent so if her feet fall on the narrow side of medium, either width may fit while an extra-narrow does not.

So what is a seller to do?

I've sold about 4 pairs of these shoes (all AA) internationally without a problem. But believe me, if I sell another pair internationally I will email the buyer before shipping to be sure they understand what they are getting.

I feel bad for the lady but not bad enough to refund the $21.

I personally would never buy shoes online unless I was replacing the exact same pair that I have previously owned or was buying from some place like Zappos that give frees hipping in both directions (and mostly sell for list price). Shoe sizes and styles vary so much and the fit is important or you will end up with sore feet, blisters, etc.Even when I try shoes on, I could wear a narrow in one brand and a medium in another.

I did not mean to imply that you should refund shipping or pay for her to ship them back. Rather, I was pointing out that disparaging the reading comprehension skills of someone who is likely NOT a native speaker of English AND who is very possibly NOT intimately familiar with idiosyncratic US shoe-sizing conventions AND who DID acknowledge in her communication to you that she did NOT expect YOU to pick up the cost of return shipping is a bit...harsh.

Just saying.

And who knows, maybe she returned those medium width shoes because they were too wide?
Buying shoes without trying them on is, at best, a crapshoot. I doubt I'd do it via eBay and I certainly wouldn't do it internationally.

I think my problem has been more with non-English speaking buyers. I have now blocked many countries because of problems.

I sell craft books and put on a lot of pictures, and so many buyers think they are buying the sweaters, even though I clearly state several times that they are PATTERNS, and not the actual items.

Just had a 0 feedback buyer from Azerbaijan Republic asking what materials the sweater was made of. I explained clearly (I thought) that it was for a BOOK OF PATTERNS, and not the actual pattern. Anyway, "sorry, I do not ship to Azerbaijan Republic".

A few minutes later I get another email, could I please send the sweater in wool! I quickly blocked her, just in case somehow she slipped through the blocked country setting.

My title line wasn't totally about this issue. I guess I didn't make that clear.
At least one or two times a week, I get an email requesting information that is in the listing. I say nothing and just reply to the question & thanking them for their interest.
Just last week I had a lady buy a lot of 2 bracelets. One was signed and one was not. It was stated that way in the listing. She emails me after getting them - love the bracelets but only one is signed??
I think some of this is due to what hwahwa talking about, but more has to do with the page layout. That's why I put my description above all my TOS and right after the photos.
